This was helpful for him, really. It at least confirmed that Dorothy really was the ingenue she seemed, and not a foreign agent, which meant his mother's death really had been an accident. He does long to ask: are all those people dead? But he recognizes it immediately for the kind of foot-in-mouth comment he's learned by bitter experience to avoid.
