"...ah... well, as to the first part, yes, typically, at least-... that is, in what one might call 'westernized' nations. But in many parts of the world--and, for a very long time, in most of the world--relationships were arranged by one's family. Even in western culture, there's the concept of the 'blind date,' where one meets a person face-to-face for the first time."

He pauses a moment.

"I suppose more broadly, you might say dates are about... ah... enjoying one another's company, and getting to know one another. But I don't believe anyone's expected to make themselves... take an interest they don't naturally--not here, at any rate."
