"Ah... no, certainly not set. Although I do have a little experience with it, I tend to prefer its less... constrained Renaissance and medieval forebears, particularly the English broadsword and the Kunst des Fechtens."
He pauses a moment, smiling to himself.
"However, I was always taught that every school has lessons to teach. I've seen kendo, of course, but I've never had the opportunity to actually study it properly. I confess, in my ignorance, it's always struck me as being very much a sport style, before--I'm all the more intrigued to see what 'pragmatic kendo' entails."
He's making every effort to express his point while never directly contradicting anything Hijikata said... but sport kendo sure seems at a glance to be full of heavily stylized striking rules, just like Western sport fencing, the assertion of its practicality has him puzzled but interested.
