Alric had done most of his moving in the day prior, and taken a look around the grounds. So, now that it was the general moving-in day for new students, while he was hardly an expert, he's at least gotten a sense of the place, and he put that to good work, strolling about in search of anyone seeming to be lost or otherwise troubled amid the chaos of settling in. It's the noble thing to do.
