"Because, I just don't!"

Sandry sighed, and turned away slightly. She hadn't meant to raise her voice so much.

"Because, once upon a time, there was a little girl. She had a mother and a father who loved her and a nanny who took care of her. They traveled to all sorts of exciting places and the little girl loved every minute of it.

But one day, there was an earthquake, and the house the little girl lived in fell down all around her. Her parents were killed and the little girl was trapped by the rubble. Her nanny would slip her food and water through a hole in the ceiling, but could not get the little girl out.

Unfortunately, the nanny disappeared, killed as she searched for someone to save the little girl. No more food, no more water, and the batteries in the little girl's flashlight were dying. Soon, the darkness came.

When a rescue party finally found the little girl, the light hurt her eyes so badly that she screamed and had to be kept in a dimly light room days. But even though her eyes eventually healed, the dark continued to terrify her. Each night when she went to bed, she made sure to leave a lamp on next to her bed."
