Movie night! [OPEN]

WHO: Everyone!
WHAT: As promised over the network, Dick's organised a movie night for students (and faculty) in one of the classrooms.
WHEN: 1st November, evening
WHERE: School classroom generously volunteered by one of the staff
WARNINGS: Teens? Snacks? Movies? Things should be tame but you never know!

With help, Dick's managed to get all the furniture in the classroom stacked up against one wall, the cleared floorspace now covered in beanbags from the library, pillows, blankets, even the odd mattress here and there. Some tables have been lined up against another wall to fill with snacks and drinks brought by everyone, ranging from leftover sweets gathered the night before to fresh hot pizza, steaming away in the open cartons. Volunteering chaperones Zian, Booker and Feliks might have their hands full with all these kids, but at least the food's good!

Before the movie watching starts, the students gather round with the DVDs and Blu-rays they've brought, voting on which ones they want to see and which ones can be sadly put away for another night. Once that's done, straws are drawn to pick viewing order, and it's set.

The lights dim, let the movie watching begin!

Heckler Section

Someone set up a sign in the back of the room, and a small section of tape around some seats. The sign says 'heckler section.' One of the advantages of being Maya, she's using her powers to keep the conversation section out of the rest of the room. Because Maya really didn't feel like watching a movie, she felt like mocking a movie.

She really gets into it when they get to the horror film.

Alex had spotted the Heckler Section on a snack run and the moment the horror movie started up, he made a beeline for two reasons. One, it was as far from the screen as possible, and two, it was probably the only way he'd get through the film.

"Okay, bets on what order everyone dies in," he said as he settled in with a fresh bowl of popcorn.

"First is easy. Blonde, she's not even wearing a real shirt and we haven't even reached the title card." Maya hadn't seen this before, but that was the clear safe bet. Horror films weren't her thing, but they have some killer music, so she'd seen a few if they did interesting things she wanted to listen to. If only she could mute the dialog or something.

"And there's only one black guy, so... he's probably after that. These things aren't exactly subtle on this."

"There's the jock. If he doesn't die making out with the blonde, they'll probably make him a jerk so he can last about 3/4 the way through."

Alex had rather lost his taste for horror flicks over the last year, but before that he'd seen enough of them to pick up the basic pattern. Kill off the straight up cardboard cut-out characters first, then pick off the rest as they serve their purpose, building on certain characters so their deaths can be savored at the end.

"Eh... he's set-up as a coward, he'll die alone later, or make up for his being a jerk somehow when he dies. Not really a safe early bet. But he's definitely going to die."

She adjusted her hair around her earphones. It depended on the film, for Maya, but mostly she just wanted to be around people without being at a party or anything so... requiring of conversation without a point. Here we had a movie to mock. And they were all the same, deep down, which helped out.

"Hmmm, you're probably right. Oh look, religious girl. She'll probably go before the jock, but will she go before or after Mr. Skeptic? I think after. See, this is why you should always keep an eye on your fuel gauge and check the condition of your vehicle before taking long drives. And if you're lost, do not take directions from the questionable looking man at the side of the road."

"I do wanna know where they are to be outside of cell range, those towers still buzz too loudly for me. Someone should have just paid the data charges and look for a map. Religious girl might be safe, she seems like a lock for female lead. The other girl is being a bit too slutty and all. Skeptic is dead as soon as he says something that can ironically kill him and not before."

"No kidding. I'd rather cough up a little money than get hacked to pieces in the middle of nowhere. Can you actually hear the cell towers in the film or do you just mean you can still usually still hear them when everyone else says they have no bars?"

"Thankfully the sound quality of the TV, plus the sound recording equipment used, means all I'm getting is the dialog and sound effects. Plus a few sounds of the equipment used but it isn't that bad. But out here I can hear cell towers even when people have trouble getting signal."

"Wow. I almost wish my hearing was that good, but it clearly has downsides."

He taps next to his ear, meaning her earphones.

"I don't know about other areas of the States, but I was up in Adirondack Park earlier this year and the cell reception was pretty much non-existent. But this lot are clearly not out there for the hiking."

"...I have a constant stream of music to keep my powers down so I don't go into a coma from overstimulation. I spent the first five months I was at this school locked in a room slowly going insane as Dr. McCoy tried to figure out how to keep my powers in check."

Her powers had a ton of downsides she was getting over.

"Yeah, they might actually survive if they were geared up for camping and such. Instead of... what the heck are they doing anyway?"

Alex let the subject of power downsides drop, as his power didn't have a major downside. It just wasn't particularly useful most of the time. And though he does want to ask whether it's just classical piano tracks or if she also gets to listen to fun music, he refrains. She's probably already heard that question a million times and it's not actually important for him to know.

"Maybe they have some camera gear in the bags and they're actually out there to make a slasher film. Then again, usually those sort get framed as a 'found film' and the camera work has been too steady for that. Maybe they're amateur ghost hunters..."

"I'm so glad they aren't doing found footage, whatever these idiots are up to. I wanna say weekend party, but they don't have nearly enough beer for that."

She was glad he dropped the topic of powers, she loved what she could do but she couldn't wait till she had enough control she could do it without the training wheels anymore.

"Maybe it's a hazing thing. Take the new person in the group out into the woods, pretend to summon a ghost, make fake ghost noises, etc. Might account for the mixture of cliques."

Alex munched on a handful of popcorn. It was just about time for the dying to begin.
