WHAT: Volunteering to help disadvantaged and underprivileged mutants in the cold harsh winter.
WHERE: District X (located in Alphabet City, Manhattan)
WHEN: Middle of the week
WARNING(S): With the FoH possibly jumping in, this could get rough.



At the very least, the snowfall wasn't blizzard strength today. But it was making the work of unloading the trucks at the community center difficult. But the kitchen was cooking, the fires were going, and up and down the block, families lined up to get blankets, to get food, and get some hope from a group many of them considered to be heroes for entirely different reasons than most did...

Clothing, of course, wasn't the original point, and so Storm doesn't linger on it, with that decided.

"For now, however...if you have special skills that may be of help, we can find the place for you to best put them to use, but there is still much else to be done that does not require such."

"I....I'm a monster," he said softly. "And I breathe fire. It... I was able to use it to help once before..." he said quietly, still no expression on his face, though his eyes were more red than orange and dull. He was disgusted with the monster he was.

"A monster is defined by what is within, not what is without. If you have used your powers to help once, and you wish to help again, then you seem no monster to me." Her tone is firm, but not unsympathetic. She realizes that unlearning what you've internalized isn't as easy as hearing this once.

(She'll say it as many times as she has to.)

"How did it go, when you used it before?"

He swallowed hard, thinking about that. His face was impassive, ever since his mutation, facial expressions were the result of effort and will, and he had no clue that he needed to put forth the effort. But his eyes changed, and now they shifted to a dull red as he thought.

"You're right," he said softly, his voice even, "I was a monster long before I was a mutant."

"I would not be so certain. But monsters, too, can change."

"I've killed people," he said shortly. "One of them..." he closed his mouth hard and looked away, his eyes deep deep red. He was close to breaking, close to the spiraling sorrow that made him wish his father HAD drowned him at birth.

"But you are here now, wishing to help. Does this not show that there is more to you than that?"

[tiamaris]

He shrugged, but some of the red receded. She hadn't freaked out, she hadn't chased him off or attacked him, but she also didn't seem to care. Why didn't she care? He killed his mother. How could anything ever fix that?

"I may WANT to help," he said finally, "but I might always make it worse."
