Joss approached Krista slower than a snail. Her gaze was forced to the floor, by the weight in her heart.

When she stood by Krista's chair she tried to force a weak smile to slowly cheer her up, but it degenerated into a cringe when she realized how insensitive it was.

All she could muster was a meek, "hi."

Krista, fortunately, wasn't easy to offend or upset. She even offered a little smile in return, but it was fragile and fleeting.

"Hello."

"Ummmm." Joss rubbed the back of her head.

"Da ya... da ya want me ta get ya a pillow or somethin?"

"That's sweet of you, but I don't need one right now. Thank you."

A pillow didn't seem, in the long run, like it would change much. Now, where had she seen this girl before?

...Right, on the plane back to America.

"...You were on the rescue mission, weren't you?"

Joss gave a quick nod. "Sure was. Didn't do much though." Joss shook her head at her self.

"You were part of the group that ran off weren't ya? We were worried bout ya."

The smile disappeared from her face, as she reached up to fuss nervously with her hair.

"I'm sorry to have worried you so much."

Joss smiled and this time she didn't feel guilty about it. "Don't worry none. Just remember we're all here for ya."

A thought suddenly occurred to her. "Speakin of which, do ya want ta talk about what happened. I always got an open ear."

"That's kind of you..."

Krista bit her lip, thinking. She never really felt the things she was sure she was supposed to feel, when things like this happened. Faking it could get exhausting, not to mention repetitive.

"I... I don't even really know what to say, though, I'm afraid."

Joss sighed. "To be truthful, I don't know what its like to loose someone. Everyone I ever cared about, my Pa, my friends, my heroes, they're all still alive, but one thing I do know, is that bein alone ain't pleasant."

Joss hopped on to the right arm of the arm chair, her body just small enough sit on it like it were a chair on to itself.

"So ya mind if I stay a while?"

Krista herself was tiny, and not taking up all that much space even for her, but it was a little odd to have someone she didn't know well come so close.

"I don't mind, no."

It was a little strange to her, but she didn't mind.

Joss leaned back with her hands under he head, one leg crossed over the other, and stared at a ceiling fan, hopping her mere presence would help Krista feel more comfortable. She kept an ear pointed to Krista, just in case she had something to say.

She wished she knew what the girl wanted. It was hard for her to talk to people when she didn't know what they wanted her to be for them.

But it was normal to be quiet when you were upset, right? Krista certainly hoped so.

Joss seemed content just staring for a long, but then the young girl looked to Krista, and somehow concluded she needed a hug.

She reached for her.

It was hard for Krista not to jerk in shock at the stranger's touch.

No one hugged her. No one ever -- Eli did, sometimes, but she thought she knew her, thought she was someone who deserved that kind of thing. Didn't this girl know that it was dangerous, to touch people like that? They could panic, they could lash out, they could say words that left wounds deeper than the fleeting ones from their hands. It was dangerous.

But she had to calm down -- normal people didn't act like that, she had to act normal. She forced her shoulders to relax, forced her breathing to stay calm.

"...Thank you."

"Yer welcome." Joss said softly.

"Ya looked like ya needed it."

Joss was willing to embrace Krista until she felt better, or until she cried on her shoulder.

The hugging didn't stop, and it was... it was disconcerting. She didn't know what to do, and it didn't get any clearer the longer it went on. Krista bit her lip, then forced a smile.

"I'm fine, really. Sorry to worry you again..."

Joss released Krista.

"Don't ya know? Worrin bout each other is why we're here. its what bein a team is all about."

Krista tried not to be too obvious about drawing back when Joss let go -- she did stay near, but she claimed at least a little more space, still trying to make sense of a world where people hugged her.

"That doesn't mean I should give you so much to worry about. It really wasn't my intention..."

Joss scratched her head. She wanted to know what her intention really was, but it seemed so rude to ask.

"It's ok. Ya didn't mean no harm, so don't worry about us bein worried. Dang I wish Greg heard that pun."

God, finally. Common ground, something she knew how to work with.

"Are you a friend of Greg's?"

"Dang strait I am." Joss lifted her chin up proudly.

"He showed me all around the school, and I gotta say he's a punny guy."

Yeah. She just did that.

Oh, God, not another pun person.

Krista smiled.

"I certainly can't argue with that!"
