Looking to the future... [OPEN]

WHO: Everyone
WHAT: Two things, first the President's Address, and then the news of the world, brought right to your school!
WHERE: On any television, radio, or computer screen (assuming they're on a news site)
WHEN: The presidential address happened on Monday, the news events are more current
WARNING(S): mentions of school violence in one of the news posts, and as always, if a thread goes into warning label territory, either throw it in the subject line or take it to a separate log.

[On a small, raised stage set up in the White House gardens, there’s a polished wood podium with the presidential seal on the front. President Kelly, with more gray in his hair than he had as a senator, approaches it, adjusting his glasses and viewing the assembled members of the press in thoughtful silence for a moment before he speaks.]

My fellow Americans.

We stand once again at a crossroads, faced with choices of great importance. At home and abroad, we have been faced new challenges with the rise of the mutant population - challenges in our military, in our courtrooms, in our society, in our homes and our families. We are in a perilous place, and our unity as Americans under question. It is crucial, at this juncture, to take a firm stance on these matters, and position ourselves towards the future.

The Mutant Registration Act… is not what our path forward should look like.

[There’s murmuring among the press, indistinct, but fairly shocked in tone. He holds up his hand for quiet.]

Five years ago, I stood in support of Project Wideawake, an initiative which purported to improve our nation’s security. Instead, as a direct result, many Americans were robbed of their dignity, of the due process to which each of us has a right. Innocent lives were put in danger, and some lost, because we allowed ourselves to be blinded by power and fear. We are a nation founded in the promise of freedom, and in creating second-class citizens, we betrayed that promise... I cannot in good conscience support such measures again, and if this bill passes, it is my intention to veto it immediately.

Looking to the future, we must focus on developing inclusive solutions for these real issues, ones which affect all Americans and all people in our world today -- solutions will which protect our society, without sacrificing the freedom or dignity of any of its members. Together, we can create a better America, one that is safe for all its citizens.

Thank you, and good night.

"... shocked the entertainment world today by coming out at a live show in Los Angeles that she was, in fact, mutant. Dazzler, real name Alison Blaire, used the opportunity in front of thousands of fans and millions watching at as the show was broadcast live on HBO, to finally 'come out of the closet', as she said. She demonstrated her powers by performing a cover of the classic pop tune "Born this Way", with slightly altered lyrics, and a custom light show produced by her mutant powers. Dazzler later told the press 'The era where we all have to hide who we are is ending. Mutants don't have to be afraid anymore' She said that it was President Kelly's words than inspired her to finally have the courage to come out..."

"... controversial radio host Hunter Hellquist reported a record breaking amount of call-in traffic for his radio program. 'The country fed up with a goverment that is refusing to stand by its people. President Kelly betrayed us with his aims to veto the Mutant Registration Act and my listeners had a lot to say about it', Hellquist quoted towards the end of his broadcast that day..."

"... a huge success in Central Park with massive turnout. Sublime told the press that he was honored that so many people have taken up his banner. He was further honored that President Kelly has moved away from the Mutant Registration Act and has said he would gladly speak before congress to propose alternative solutions to mutant related legal issues..."

"... new details of the bombing in London reveal that the explosive was most likely constructed using mutant abilities. The casing for the bomb, in particular, was made from what investigators claimed was 'extremely dense bone matter'. One of the proposed suspects, The Vanisher, is still at large and has not been located by investigating authorities..."

"... shot and killed by police after holding up a school assembly at gunpoint and resisting arrest. The young man, claiming to be joining a group called the 'U-Men' had only moments ago killed and mutilated another student, a closeted mutant. Before police became involved, he also claimed he was going to use parts of the other student's body to gain his mutant powers. We warn our viewers that the following gruesome footage is very graphic, and that they should take discretion... "

Ok, back where you were from?

Nothing was normal, as far as I can tell.

And there's a difference between "let people who are born mutant be okay with themselves" and "force everyone to be mutates", God!

I don't know. People do change. I think he deserves a second chance.

But isn't that what Sublime wants? To make mutants?

[His brow furrows.]

If people don't mind being mutants maybe it'll happen again here.

[Aki leans over the back of the couch near the beginning of the broadcast, watching idly. She hasn't sat down properly yet, because she's not sure this is interesting enough to warrant it, but Leo's words get her attention.]

Especially since "looks impossible" doesn't mean anything against somebody with the right know-how. That sort of thing is what magic tricks are based on in the first place, after all...

[Aki replies from her spot behind the couch, where she's standing to watch the tv over Feliks' head.]

Probably until we stop having to fight against telling the government what we are, just because people are scared of us and what we can do?

[She gives her own little snort of disbelief about it, too, but it's soft enough to be ignored by most.]

[Aki's not at all bothered by the idea of the images, though she feels some degree of rage and sympathy on behalf of the poor kid who was hurt. It's this calm and unbothered part of her that lets her notice when one of the group leaves and notes who it is.

A kid so into baseball like Tanaka is probably used to pretty terrible on-screen injuries, right? (Or maybe she just has a terrible idea of team sports.) She's curious and concerned enough to follow him out, giving him a few feet of distance before she calls out.
]

Tanaka? Are you okay?

Yeah. If he really is trying to change things, then he deserves that much. At least from the mutant community.

A - Kelly's Address

[Yeah, there's a suspicious eyebrow going up at all that.] Well that's an awfully quick change of tune.

B - Sublime

[Oh hell no.] Right, get that creep to talk to congress for us. That'll improve things.

C - U-Men

[His lips tighten while he watches that footage. He can handle it, though. Having been in field missions, having had a combat teacher who'd pretty much been psychotic had prepared him for stuff like that. He makes no comment on how dumb and uncreative the term U-Men is -- even though it's definitely both of those things. That's not the important part.] Well that's . . . interesting.

[He hadn't kept up with the organ theft story a few years back -- it had seemed so far away at the time -- but now . . .]

[A - The President's Address]

[This is something worth watching live. Hijikata doesn't much care for the potentially crowded common areas, so he's livestreaming it via tablet out in the garden, cigarette in hand.]

[He's prepared to be disappointed. He finds himself a little stunned.]

[It's not that he trusts the earnestness of Kelly's intentions. More likely, he thinks, he's following the tides -- which would mean that he and his analysts think registration and similar are losing causes.]

[Interesting. He wonders what they know.]

[B - General]

[In the evening, he can once again be found in his classroom, graded papers placed in a neat stack on the desk, standing at the whiteboard and writing in Japanese. Three main sections this time -- an overview of the London situation as he understands it (with some rather complex diagrams), a dissection of Sublime's Third Species rhetoric with specific points tied to the U-men and the high school incident, and an analysis of recent public opinion polls and congressional reactions to the President's speech (with particular attention given to people who are on the fence or have spoken out in particularly high-profile ways).]

I don't really get politics, but I hope we can trust him. I don't like being so distrustful of people.
batteredbatter: (That doesn't sound right.)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-09-26 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
So what's that have to do with me though?

[Well, it IS distracting him but... given how crummy he feels, it's also kind of irritating him]
batteredbatter: (Oh shi-)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-09-26 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
[Once outside of the common room, he took a moment to just lean against the wall and compose himself before heading for his room... but he jerks upright when he hears someone call his name, turning around to see who.]

O, oh, Aki... you surprised me. Huh? Oh, I'm fine.

[He's. Not very convincing.]

That would, at least, be entertaining. Is he married? Does the poor woman have a mutant in bed?
kamiizumi: (049)

[personal profile] kamiizumi 2014-09-26 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I mean - structurally speaking, there's not a lot that's impossible if you know what you're doing and you have the time to prepare for it.

[He has a lot of feelings on people who think you can't get into weird places just because they're up high or don't have stairs, okay.]

The bomb's more compelling as evidence, though. I'm not an explosives expert or anything, but trying to fake something like that sounds a lot harder.
kamiizumi: (007)

[personal profile] kamiizumi 2014-09-26 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Was "leave people guessing" their style, though? Straight-forward terrorism usually takes responsibility, doesn't it?

[He wasn't really old enough to get the full impact of things when the Brotherhood was active five years ago, and they hadn't been paying a lot of attention down in the sewers anyway, as isolated as they'd been trying to stay. But the things he's heard about the Brotherhood always sounded like they had a clear message and they weren't terribly secretive about it, so it seems a little weird to him.]
kamiizumi: (068)

...or did they just stop being considered newsworthy?

Hey, unless you're, like, on fire all the time there is nothing wrong with a mutant in bed.

[Toph.]

Someone Google if Kelly's married. I really want to know now.

[She has the same thought, it would have been interesting to investigate. It sounds intriguing, though more from a constant curiosity about what mutants can do than the bomb itself.

She sits down beside him, settling heavily onto a chair and peering over at his assignments. She takes one he's not immediately looking at and glances over it as she replies
]

I'm beginning to think I have the worst timing in the world for this country. At least he's promised to veto it, though promises are cheap in politics. Could you get me a cup when it's done?

We were attacked by Sentinels, Phoenix destroyed the school and launched me sixteen months into the future and I was presumed dead.

*Of course, she was aware this was an excuse, and it felt very hollow as she shared it. Especially the slight pause before she continued.*

Want cream or sugar in it? [He marks a few other pages while she looks over the one she has.]

Yeah, but lets see if he actually stays true to his word. You know how politicians can be. [They say one thing be do another. Kaito clearly didn't trust them. He'd never seen or met one that he did.] I agree with you on the bad timing thing. It seemed as soon as we decided to come back, this shit started.

Both please. [ Her eyes start to glaze a bit as she runs into some legalese and she sets it back on his pile.]

I'm bad luck, obviously. [SIGH] I hope he does. I hope we can at least count on one person to stay to their word. Mn, we need to meet a precog who can warn us before moving.
