Looking to the future... [OPEN]

WHO: Everyone
WHAT: Two things, first the President's Address, and then the news of the world, brought right to your school!
WHERE: On any television, radio, or computer screen (assuming they're on a news site)
WHEN: The presidential address happened on Monday, the news events are more current
WARNING(S): mentions of school violence in one of the news posts, and as always, if a thread goes into warning label territory, either throw it in the subject line or take it to a separate log.

[On a small, raised stage set up in the White House gardens, there’s a polished wood podium with the presidential seal on the front. President Kelly, with more gray in his hair than he had as a senator, approaches it, adjusting his glasses and viewing the assembled members of the press in thoughtful silence for a moment before he speaks.]

My fellow Americans.

We stand once again at a crossroads, faced with choices of great importance. At home and abroad, we have been faced new challenges with the rise of the mutant population - challenges in our military, in our courtrooms, in our society, in our homes and our families. We are in a perilous place, and our unity as Americans under question. It is crucial, at this juncture, to take a firm stance on these matters, and position ourselves towards the future.

The Mutant Registration Act… is not what our path forward should look like.

[There’s murmuring among the press, indistinct, but fairly shocked in tone. He holds up his hand for quiet.]

Five years ago, I stood in support of Project Wideawake, an initiative which purported to improve our nation’s security. Instead, as a direct result, many Americans were robbed of their dignity, of the due process to which each of us has a right. Innocent lives were put in danger, and some lost, because we allowed ourselves to be blinded by power and fear. We are a nation founded in the promise of freedom, and in creating second-class citizens, we betrayed that promise... I cannot in good conscience support such measures again, and if this bill passes, it is my intention to veto it immediately.

Looking to the future, we must focus on developing inclusive solutions for these real issues, ones which affect all Americans and all people in our world today -- solutions will which protect our society, without sacrificing the freedom or dignity of any of its members. Together, we can create a better America, one that is safe for all its citizens.

Thank you, and good night.

"... shocked the entertainment world today by coming out at a live show in Los Angeles that she was, in fact, mutant. Dazzler, real name Alison Blaire, used the opportunity in front of thousands of fans and millions watching at as the show was broadcast live on HBO, to finally 'come out of the closet', as she said. She demonstrated her powers by performing a cover of the classic pop tune "Born this Way", with slightly altered lyrics, and a custom light show produced by her mutant powers. Dazzler later told the press 'The era where we all have to hide who we are is ending. Mutants don't have to be afraid anymore' She said that it was President Kelly's words than inspired her to finally have the courage to come out..."

"... controversial radio host Hunter Hellquist reported a record breaking amount of call-in traffic for his radio program. 'The country fed up with a goverment that is refusing to stand by its people. President Kelly betrayed us with his aims to veto the Mutant Registration Act and my listeners had a lot to say about it', Hellquist quoted towards the end of his broadcast that day..."

"... a huge success in Central Park with massive turnout. Sublime told the press that he was honored that so many people have taken up his banner. He was further honored that President Kelly has moved away from the Mutant Registration Act and has said he would gladly speak before congress to propose alternative solutions to mutant related legal issues..."

"... new details of the bombing in London reveal that the explosive was most likely constructed using mutant abilities. The casing for the bomb, in particular, was made from what investigators claimed was 'extremely dense bone matter'. One of the proposed suspects, The Vanisher, is still at large and has not been located by investigating authorities..."

"... shot and killed by police after holding up a school assembly at gunpoint and resisting arrest. The young man, claiming to be joining a group called the 'U-Men' had only moments ago killed and mutilated another student, a closeted mutant. Before police became involved, he also claimed he was going to use parts of the other student's body to gain his mutant powers. We warn our viewers that the following gruesome footage is very graphic, and that they should take discretion... "

I don't know about everyone else, but hard for me to take them seriously with a name like that.

[personal profile] wholovesyou 2014-09-28 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't get to where I am now just by playing it safe, sugar.
niepokonany: (Oh is that what you had said?)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2014-09-28 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like somebody from here started a U2 tribute band, and was also super boring and I guess had about 20 seconds to come up with the name.

[That is the only acceptable excuse. And it's only borderline, because why would you start a U2 tribute band?]

Well, yeah, I'm the pitcher... but why should I help you get back at her?

"Only while there is a teacher present, but I am not sure I want the teachers aware of what I am considering."

Laura didn't move, and being discovered didn't really bother her. Hanabi was sharp, but Laura was not exactly subtle with her intentions right now, if a member of staff were near she would know. She would move, if she felt the need to. Right now she was trying to determine the security on the elevator shaft if she tried to bypass the elevator itself.

"But I might need to go down there anyway, without permission."

You don't get to revoke my anything, Miss Mouse. But is Kelly married?
upatbat: Official game art, edited by me. (If I'm not mistaken it's been in flames)

[personal profile] upatbat 2014-09-28 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
[No stairs = no problem, man. She totally gets that.]

You've got a point... It'd take some seriously complicated work to make something like that without mutant abilities, right? If it's even possible in the first place.

[She bites her lip, considering. It doesn't seem like this case has easy answers for mutants, after all.]
upatbat: Official game art. (The night was all you had)

[She might have let it pass if he'd perked up after a few seconds, but right now, this is pinging all of her overprotective, pushy instincts.]

You are so not fine, Tanaka, even if you're not sick. You need to go get some air, or lay down, or something.

[Wince. He's not trying to judge, at all - and considering the setbacks his family dealt with while he was stuck with the Foot, he can certainly understand being busy.]

That's fair.

I guess the question is whether they'd stand to gain more from claiming responsibility or making people guess. Most terrorists, it's the former, but if they normally position themselves as standing for all mutantkind, then using a bomb like that is claiming responsibility, in its own way - because they wouldn't want a perceived difference between themselves and any mutant off the street.

...doesn't really prove anything one way or another, though. It just goes to whether it makes sense to rule them out or not.
kamiizumi: (082)

[personal profile] kamiizumi 2014-09-28 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
It'd be a lot harder than just making a bomb the normal way. For a human bomber, the only reason to do it intentionally would be to make mutants look responsible.

For a mutant bomber, the only reason would be if you want to draw attention to the fact that you're a mutant, or you honestly don't care - but the way things are, I think most of us would be conscious of what message it sends to leave that kind of evidence, and a normal criminal would probably do better to avoid the attention and just make a bomb the old-fashioned way. It's less incriminating.

...either way, I'd say it's pretty clearly an intentional message.

I don't blame her. She's a celebrity. They wouldn't be as shocked by it once she comes out as a mutant.

...Assuming she isn't straight at all.

Hey I revoke Amelia's privileges all the time--but yes. He is. With a daughter even. She's about our age it seems.
batteredbatter: (Upset)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-09-28 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so maybe I do... but you don't need to make a big deal of it, Narukami, it's nothing you need to worry about.

[Defensive, much?]

[personal profile] vulgarcrocodile 2014-09-28 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's always difficult to tell. But it's just best not to get your hopes up in case they disappoint us. [It wasn't like Kelly hadn't been on the other side just a couple of years ago. The sound of the coffee maker running can be suddenly heard.]

Then you have the bombing and that mutant kid being killed. A person has to be real fucked up to kill and mutilate someone like that.
monkeythief: (pic#8228023)

[personal profile] monkeythief 2014-09-28 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
So then what sort of friend do I count as? A precious one? A so-so one?

[personal profile] monkeythief 2014-09-28 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Sun opens his mouth to say something, but he pauses and then thinks about it.]

I hadn't really thought about that..but they could be related. But the bomb was made using mutant abilities..they would have to have a mutant working with them.
fuckuimametalbender: (This)

[personal profile] fuckuimametalbender 2014-09-28 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Amelia isn't nearly as funny as I am, okay.

[Toph hums at the news]

Wonder if she married a mutant.
gloriousandfree: (pic#8228317)

[personal profile] gloriousandfree 2014-09-28 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[Times like these she wishes she was wearing one of her big sweaters so she could wrap herself in it. It wouldn't stop the shivers from the horror, but it would make her feel better]

Does it even work? Stealing mutant organs to get mutant powers? That's what he was trying to do right?
soccerwhisperer: (i made soccer cry)

[personal profile] soccerwhisperer 2014-09-28 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes... Sometimes mutants have to work with bad people. They could be threatened, or paid, or... something.
gloriousandfree: (pic#8228280)

[personal profile] gloriousandfree 2014-09-28 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't let her hear you say that.

[She scrolls up and down the page but there isn't any real information about his daughter. Just that she exists and her age really.]

You mean his daughter? Maybe?
knowitallgoddess: (pic#8233645)

[personal profile] knowitallgoddess 2014-09-28 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
All my friends are precious so that's a pretty obvious answer.
monkeythief: (pic#8227990)

[personal profile] monkeythief 2014-09-28 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
So then would you make some of those cookies? Just so I can see if you can make them. Not so I can eat them all myself.
monkeythief: (pic#8227970)

[personal profile] monkeythief 2014-09-28 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
If we are going by that..then yeah. It's entirely possible that it could be the U-Men with a mutant that is working with them. [He couldn't see why a mutant would work with people that disliked them, even if it was for money.]
vulgarcrocodile: (pic#4399075)

[personal profile] vulgarcrocodile 2014-09-28 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what the News said. But I don't think getting mutant abilities work that way. That's only something an insane or unstable person would believe. [And it would also take an insane person to attempt something like that.]
