The Brink of War [OPEN]

WHO: Everyone
WHAT: The news of the world, brought right to your school!
WHERE: On any television, radio, or computer screen (assuming they're on a news site)
WHEN: All week
WARNING(S): if a thread goes into warning label territory, either throw it in the subject line or take it to a separate log.

"... the hashtag has inspired several high profile mutants in the entertainment world, particularly mutant pop star Dazzler, to put up personal accounts of the discriminations they've faced growing up as mutants. However, the Mutant Liberation Front, or at least hackers claiming to be them, have seemingly hijacked the movement on several social media sites, using the hashtag while "doxxing", defined as "sharing the private personal information of an individual or group, anyone that has publicly spoken out against mutants. The internet has become a battleground like any city street..."

"... special diplomat Haller faced many questions arriving back in the United States today. She has stated she had no comments on Genosha's threat of war against the US. President Kelly's diplomatic relations with Genosha have largely been criticized as failures, and many in congress and in the public in general seem to be in favor of preparing for the inevitable..."

"... Reverend William Stryker, uncle to the late Donovan Zane, has lead a vigil lasting several days now on the steps of Congress and refuses to be moved until Mutant Registration has been passed. Public support is turning overwhelmingly in favor of registration as the nation mourns the young man, Donovan Zane, whose life was taken in the midst of a violent protest..."

"... with the coldest temperatures on record. Volunteers are urging everyone in District X to be extra careful as the season progresses, to regularly visit the shelters and soup kitchens, and to not try to brave the winter storms alone. They have also put out a mass call to anyone willing to help out, with food, blankets, and/or warm clothing..."

"... a nation on the brink of war. President Kelly addressed the nation saying that 2019 will not be a repeat of historical mistakes or tragedies. He says he refuses to believe the spirit of the American people are so willing to give in to bigotry and surrender to what is perceived as an inevitable war with Genosha. It can be stopped, he urged. He said we all have to look at ourselves and find the courage to do the right thing and love our fellow person, no matter what the circumstances. President Kelly continues to believe in his vision of hope for humans and mutants..."

M’gann has enough to think about with classes starting up, particularly if that armful of textbooks she’s trying to either carry or levitate is anything to go by. She’s not sure she WANTS to listen to the news on top of that, but it’s hard not to.

So is hearing a voice talking about it.

“Wait a second, we’ve met haven’t we-?“ just give her a second to remember where she’s heard the voice. It doesn’t take long though, with how distinct it is.

“You’re… the school nurse, right? The news is that worrying, huh?”

Zian turns a bit at that, giving the girl a little smile behind the mask. She was green, and that was kind of adorable to him. He'd probably enjoy being green better than purple, since that would feel like being the Hulk.

"Yeah, that's me! Hey, baker girl." He signs, the mask translating the movements into words.

The cheerfulness is edged off a bit by his worry, though, and he sighs. "Yeah, it's a mess. My mom lives there and tries to cook for as many people as possible, and I help out with medical care... it's going to be really busy."

And now that she finally gets a good look at her voice convo pal, M'gann gives a momentary blink. Purple; that's a bit different from what she's used to, but not completely bad. There's much worse colors to have on your skin, after all.

"M-m'gann. That's my name, I mean. Good to meet you in person?" She does get a quick smile from reading those words; 'baker girl' would be a tempting codename, if she didn't already have one.

"District X, you mean? I've... never actually been there, myself. My family tried to stay away from the busy areas." To the point she wonders if she'd be up to going someplace THAT crowded. "That's brave of you and your mom, though. It sounds and looks kind of... intimidating?"

And cold, judging by the images on the screen. Very, very cold.

"M'gann." Zian repeats, signing her name with a bit of a pause to see if it it sounded right in his translator. "That's a nice name. Unusual, too."

That little smile made the large medic feel more at ease, and he leaned back in the couch again, offering her a seat if she wanted one. That was a lot of books to hover along, after all.

"I never really got out of the sewers when we lived there, so I don't know much of the topside," he signs with a small shrug. "...but it's the home to a lot of mutants, many of them that can't hide among humans. They need all the help they can get."

No hospital would really admit someone like him without at least making a big fuss. "Charity is hard to get when you're already an underdog, so we gotta help them."

"I used to go by Megan, but eventually M'gann was what stuck. My dad gave me that name though, so I don't mind. I like it, too."

Since she gets the invitation, M'gann does a floating hop over the couch before settling in. The books meanwhile obediently deposit themselves on a nearby coffee table. The smile flickers out as she listens, and M'gann clasps her hands together to give them a reassuring squeeze. The information is heavy stuff, and M'gann gives a small nod at the end of it.

"That's... that's a really good point. We're kind of lucky to be able to walk around, and if they're not..." She chews her lip for a second before asking "Do you think I could help out too, with that?"

Zian gives her a soft look, smiling again. He hadn't quite meant to worry her so much, and he curses himself mentally for being bad with this social stuff. His own childhood had been pretty chaotic and lonely, so his brain to mouth filter wasn't always in place.

Instead he tries for the more cheerful, positive aspect of it all. "Yeah! I think we all should go and help. It would be the hero way, wouldn't it?" The medic makes a dorky 'hero' pose while still seated.

"I mean, we're here to try to make a good future for mutants and humans, so why not start by helping those in need? Who knows, maybe it will inspire other people to do good as well, and we have a few less mutant-haters in the world." Because that was totally how it worked.

Zian really did believe they should all do something, though. Charity was a good thing that could help the kids in many ways, just as much as it would help the people of District X. A school trip, maybe?

That pose gets a laugh out of her, and M'gann finds herself nodding again in agreement; better to focus on what can be done NOW, instead of dwelling on the past or how the present reminds her of it. She's at this school to learn how to help, right? Better start thinking of ways, in that case.

Naturally, it doesn't take long for one idea to spring to mind. Which they've already discussed before through the network, sort of.

"You think... maybe I could make something to be brought out there? I don't know if baked goods are very nutritional, but maybe I could cook something else... Maybe a pasta dish, or a soup! I can put up a sign when I cook this time, too, like someone suggested."
defibrillating: have you heard this song? (excited little nerd)

He smiles at her suggestions, nodding his head. "See, you're in the zone already! Food for the people there would be absolutely excellent. Bring a friend, cook up a storm!"

Maybe then, together with his mom's charity cooking, they'd have a chance to allow everyone to get their meals. The topsiders needed some too, after all.
littlewhitelies: (Give some thought?)

[personal profile] littlewhitelies 2015-01-25 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
"I will! Or... better yet, I can get started right now!" Sitting is all well and good, but now that she has that idea in her head, M'gann is already drifting upwards from excitement. "There's some things I can make that save well, and I think the ingredients are all there, and-"

She's still talking as she drifts out... only to peek back around the corner and stretch her hand out to get those books to float up and over to her.

"Thanks; this is a really good idea," and it doesn't hurt to ask, before she goes and loses herself in cooking again. "Are you going to be okay?"

Zian grins as M'gann starts floating up. It was a really impressive power - and cute. he turns around in the couch as she starts hovering off towards the exit, waving a little. "I'm gonna be fine! Go forth and feed the hungry!"
