The Last Stand [OPEN]]

WHO: Everyone
WHAT: The news of the world, brought right to your school!
WHERE: On any television, radio, or computer screen (assuming they're on a news site)

WARNING(S): if a thread goes into warning label territory, either throw it in the subject line or take it to a separate log.

"... sweeping victories in both the House and Senate. Creed and his fellow Last Stand congressmen celebrated today, eager to begin the new legislation they promised in their collective campaign. Senator Creed enthusiastically exclaimed that the era of letting mutants go unchecked were finally going to come to an end..."

"... calling themselves the 'Mutant Liberation Front', or MLF, the campaign of vandalism and propaganda has been extensive in Europe and has started to appear in the United States and Canada as well. The MLF are most recognized by their tag sign of the double helix, along with the word LIBERATE. Most authorities are not incredibly concerned, as the group has been non-violent so far..."

"... as talks have broken down with Genosha. A special ambassador from the United States has been assigned to speak with Genosha on behalf of the US government, Gabrielle Haller, has stated that she will ensure that peace between the two nations will be assured. Haller and President Kelly left for Genosha this morning..."

"... Mutant Arts Council of Greater New York reported record setting turnout for their Halloween charity events in District X and are now focusing on their next seasonal event for the coming holidays. The Council is also looking for volunteers for District X soup kitchens for the winter months..."

"... making her the only platinum record seller in 2018. Industry analysts say that the hype that came as a result of Dazzler's coming out spiked the sales of her album well past anything else that's been release this year. Billboard expects "Mojoworld" to make the double platinum certification before the end of the year, with the Christmas shopping season approaching..."

"... projecting the coldest winter in the last twenty years for much of the United States. Certain voices outside the scientific community have gone from denying climate change to accepting it, under the caveat that climate change is now being blamed on possible mutant interference... "

"Ah, but we are dangerous, so it must be the latter." He says, leaving it vague how they're dangerous and to what and who. He's not committing to a position yet, trying to draw her own out of her instead. That argument with Eren was tiring.

"Some of us are dangerous." She makes that correction automatically, her tone growing more pointed. "Most mutants aren't half as dangerous to society as society is to them, though."

After all, in Rin's experience, it's not like most are willing to take quite the same measures she is... When she continues speaking, she restrains her tone, but the words themselves are a thrown gauntlet. If she has to argue the point with the entire school, fine.

"It's true that it's smarter for the people in charge not to overreact, but... That's why this 'liberation front' should be doing something more than tagging buildings. You can't downplay the severity of a situation when it's impossible to ignore."

"A conversation we've all had with prejudiced baselines. But should we be emphasizing our harmlessness in the first place? It seems that hasn't gotten us anywhere."

He begins to smile. She seems to not be willing to just agree with him. He can respect that feistiness all the more for not sharing it.

Then the TV highlights more MLF graffiti. This one is a more elaborate piece, a mural with heroic, Che-esque portraits of prominent mutant activists and terrorists, including Magneto, Mystique...and, near the bottom, his own mother. What little color his face had suddenly drains, though he retains enough presence of mind to note that the portrait severely glosses over her appearance.

"Believe me, I'd be all for changing tactics. As long as the majority of mutants aren't, though, saying that mutants as a group aren't dangerous is just stating facts." Her eyes narrow, though, both at his phrasing and that shift in his expression. "What kind of strategy would you suggest, then?"

No sooner is that question out of her mouth than the news starts its montage of graffiti. She glances away from his face and to the television's screen, her own expression turning confused. What's so unsettling about that?

"...Huh? What's your problem?"

He's going to say something snarky about how they're a thousand percent more likely to be able to set people on fire with their minds. But his mouth is a bit dry so it'd come out croaky.

"...Nothing important."

[You can have her figure out who he is time jumping this thread or make a new network post about it if you want. Or tag his. Also if you want him to accidentally see some of her past with his new power, that's cool with me]

She narrows her eyes at his response, plainly suspicious. After a second or two, though, she sighs and shrugs, the gestured accompanied by a dismissive half-toss of her head. If he doesn't want to share, that's not any concern of hers. "Well, whatever. If you're forfeiting, it's no skin off my back."

Obviously, he needs her permission to excuse himself and lie down, or whatever it is he needs to do.

[ I'd been meaning to tag that post after this thread got a little further, but then some ~personal issues came up, so I haven't been doing much in the way of tagging at all, unfortunately. We can cut this one short, if you'd rather.

Also, him seeing some past stuff would definitely interest me, if you'd like to do that during a later meeting? ]
