[Ken's usually pretty quiet when the news comes on. Well, not that he isn't usually pretty quiet anyway, but the news takes an extra layer of focus because some of these words definitely did not come up in his English classes before he got to America.

Some of Takakage's words didn't, either, and he frowns and starts trying to punch "insidious" into his phone.

Crap, how is that spelled...]

[ He looks up from leafing through the newspaper, noticing Ken trying to type something into his phone. ]

Amada? [ He defaults to surname for fellow Japanese. ] Were you here when Sublime attacked the school?

[Ken looks up a little guiltily, although it's not really guilt at being caught doing something bad (which doesn't happen much) as guilt at being caught not getting it.]

Um, no...I only got here in January.

I see.

[ Takakage closes his eyes briefly, letting a sigh punctuate his words. ]

That is good, then. It isn't something you should have been subjected to.

[ He did not see Sublime in person, but that did not diminish his dislike for the man by any bit. ]

But we still need to be prepared. This will not be the first time that someone will attack our school.

[Not something he should have been subjected to...

On one hand something in him is bristling because come on, he can totally handle more than people think - and part of him is just remembering how the riots at the MLF rally went and how he'd needed to get bailed out, because for all that he's seen some shit...really, Ken can't do that much, yet.]

If it happens again I don't want to just hide.

We all can fight here. [ Well, most of them, and the non-combat mutants can act as support - like how he and Zian work together. ] But prolonged conflict will not be good for both sides.

[ No one should be hurt, and yet... ]

I can't. Not well enough.

[He can...blind someone for a few seconds and kick them in the shins. Awesome.

If there's one thing Ken hates, it's feeling helpless.]

That can be learned. You have potential.

[ Everyone has potential. And it did take him years to learn how to control a human's internal fluids - though that is something he would never use unless absolutely necessary. ]

How long did it take you to get...good enough to defend yourself, at least?

[Learning everything is a long way off. Right now, he'll settle for learning enough to not have to run away. Or see people get punched trying to cover for him.

(Or crushed under buildings trying to cover for him. Or shot trying to cover for him.)]

[ He's silent for a while, as he ponders the answer. ]

My power is over water. Learning enough to fight took five years. Learning enough to live through the fight took ten more.

[ Almost anyone can use water whips and spears. Refining enough control and water sense to make it effective is something completely different altogether. Not that he even wants to fight in the first place - most of his killing power stems from how easily he can lock on and control the water in a person's body. ]

[Five years is literally almost half the time Ken has been alive.

He's going to be utterly failing at fighting and watching people get punched trying to bail his butt out for literally forever this is horrible Takakage do you understand...]

[ That does partially occur to him, so he quickly adds: ]

I had to learn most of that by myself, in secret. You can practice a lot easier here, I think.

[ He inhales deeply, frowning a little more. ]

I need to apologize, Amada. My abilities are too different from yours for me to teach you anything.

That's not something you need to apologize for.

[It's not like they choose powers, after all.]

[ He folds his hands together on his lap. ]

One of the school guidance counselors has a similar ability to yours, I believe. I can set something up if you wish for it.

[ Not that he is expecting Ken to agree easily, because Caelius is a counselor - and even if the boy wouldn't go to the other staff member for actual counseling, it might make him feel uncomfortable. ]

[On one hand, Ken has zero interest in having to talk about his feelings to a counselor.

On the other hand, he is really sick of not being able to defend himself.]

...just for that, right?

[NO STEALTH...COUNSELING...right...]

[ He honestly thinks Caelius might try, so he would need to have a word with the other beforehand. ]

You can also request access to the Danger Room after he deems you proficient, too. It should not take too long.

[ Again, he is less worried about Ken's proficiency, but more about the counselor's tendency to worry too much. ]

I have things most days right after classes end...but after five all I usually have is homework.
