The last riot was bad enough.

[She can say that, but she doesn't regret her own actions in the fight, or blame anyone for fighting back. It's really only reasonable that they did.]

Can they put us in prison for that, though? It doesn't seem like something that should be treated so seriously, even if they have some sort of penalty...

If mutant registration is made into law, by refusing to cooperate, we'd be breaking the law. And if something like that manages to pass in the first place, I doubt they'll have any qualms about punishing offenders.

[But then Rin's expression clouds, and she falls briefly quiet. A second later, she asks:]

Did make it out okay back then?

[Where that topic is concerned, her harsh demeanor is just a little less harsh.]

[She notices that change in demeanor, and wonders if her little push back there had some sort of lasting effect.]

[As for the question itself... Her hand instinctively goes to her chest, a little low and to the left of center. Getting punched by someone twice your size isn't fun, as it turns out.]

[Apparently, if you give Rin a fake feeling, she has trouble separating from her real feelings afterwards. This might have something to do with her actually being a big softie.

In any case, at that response, her expression shifts into a little scowl.]

Told you you should have found some bigger to hide behind.

[But her dissatisfaction isn't actually directed at Krista.]

[Krista looks a little bit chastened, but only for a second. Then she shakes her head, giving Rin an earnest, slightly pleading look.]

He was attacking a little boy, though. Should I have run away?

He was what—?!

[Well, there goes that quiet demeanor. But attacking a kid... That was low in a way that left Rin's hands balling up into fists.]

To a little kid? I take it back—what you should have done was nail the back of his head with something heavy.

I didn't think about anything like that. I just thought if I didn't do something, he might get hurt...

[And running around behind him doesn't seem nearly as brave and selfless as standing up to him directly.]

[Rin grunts and makes a show of looking exasperated, shaking her head. When she starts to speak again, it sounds like a lecture.]

Look, I'm not blaming you since it was your first time [or so she assumes, anyway], but... Throwing yourself on a sword for someone sounds well and good in theory, but in practice, it means the best case scenario is one person escaping. Worst case, you don't buy them enough time and there are two bodies instead of one. It's much safer and more effective if you do something to disable the attacker instead.

[Listening to Rin, she feels like she's listening to someone from an alien planet. She talks about all these things like she should care about them -- her own survival, the other person's, safety -- and she just doesn't and can't.]

[She really is awful.]

[On the outside, she frowns, worried and upset.]

I'm sorry. It all happened so fast...

You don't have to apologize? What's done is done, so there's no point to it. Just do a better job next time.

[For her part, Rin's demeanor isn't sympathetic at all. Violent conflict is a fact of life for her, so that's how she treats it now: simple fact and reality.]

[She nods a little, averting her eyes, going for "pitiable" again.]

...Right...

[mouflon]

[Rin just meets that pitiable look with an aggravated sound.]

And stop acting like you're a dog that got left out in the rain! You're supposed to square your shoulders and say, "Yes, ma'am!"

[Really, there's no winning with Rin, is there? Krista thinks almost wistfully about using her power on her again, but she doesn't want to be too obvious about it.]

I did say I'm sorry. I'll try harder next time.

[mouflon]

[As it turns out, that wouldn't have been necessary anyway. Rin nods at that answer, apparently satisfied.]

[Well, at least she'll probably leave her alone for a bit now. Honestly, it's a bit of a relief. Resisting the urge to just make Rin's emotions less confusing is a sort of constant strain.]
