"...reported sightings of the fugitive mutant supremacist leader Claudine Renko remain unsubstantiated. A S.H.I.E.L.D. spokesperson assured the press that all plausible leads are being investigated, but declined to comment on her most likely whereabouts. Anonymous sources have sent News 10 the following photos, showing Renko or someone bearing a strong resemblance to her in a Mexico City cafe, and later in an airport near Cape Town, South Africa, leading to widespread speculation that she's on her way to Genosha. Anyone with knowledge of her whereabouts is again encouraged to contact..."

"...team of medical experts working alongside the Xavier Institute's Henry McCoy have put forth that the disease exclusively affects people with active X-genes -- in other words, mutants. While it has continued to spread like wildfire through District X and other mutant enclaves, no related cases have been confirmed among baseline humans. With the death toll at home rising and new cases beginning to be reported around the world, a travel advisory has been put out discouraging mutants from traveling overseas in hopes of slowing the disease's spread..."

"...Travel restrictions to the notoriously closed-off country of Genosha have been tightened even further in light of the mysterious virus affecting mutants around the world. In a personal statement, Magneto stressed that since the concentrated mutant population in Genosha puts them at greater risk from this disease, 'measures must be taken to prevent any contamination within Genosha's borders'. Many high-ranking Genoshan diplomats have gone further and offered their condolences to the families affected by the disease, as well as applauding President Kelly's executive decision to channel funding towards treatment and research of the disease. A number of Genoshan doctors and scientists have left the country to collaborate with the researchers studying the virus..."

"...vigils held around the country this weekend in memory of the virus's victims..."

"...meteorologists scratching their heads about the sudden storm near an Appalachian town in southern Virginia last week, where record levels of rainfall caused flash flooding and mudslides. Other nearby towns were completely unaffected, and experts say that the prevailing weather conditions don't line up with such a dramatic downpour..."

"...Senator Graydon Creed appealed to his major constituents during last night's primary debate with his usual hard line on social issues and mutants in particular. However, businessman Norman Osbourne has risen in the polls after claiming that Creed's proposed policies, including the Mutant Registration bill being debated in the House, don't go far enough. Osbourne promised that, if elected, he'll introduce legislation aimed at deporting all mutant foreign nationals to their home countries, drawing applause from the debate's live audience and an outcry from leaders of the mutant refugee community..."

Zancrow shrugged. "Not surprised. Master Hades died from a heart attack before we did much."

Much being relative. He destroy several towns after all.

"And now here you are."

Here they both were. Funny how things turn out.

"I'm done with all that anyway," Alex said, after finishing his bottle of water. "They can't use me anymore because they let too many people find out about me. Not that I'd do it, even if they asked."

"Yeah, funny isn't it."

He stood and stretched, his back cracking audibly. "Working for the humans must have sucked."

In his mind doing the missions weren't so bad, it was who was the employers that would make him mad. But he had been broken and reconditioned to accept high risk missions as the norm by Master Hades.

Alex lobbed his empty water bottle into a nearby trash can. It dropped straight in without touching the rim.

"The humans? I'd have still hated it even if we'd all been mutants."

Case and point, SCORPIA, though they hadn't been an entirely mutant organization, just mostly.

"Everyone just wants to know what you can do for them, or what they can make you do for them."

"Yeah I know. I was eleven when Master Hades took me into Grimoire Heart."

He studied Alex carefully before adding. "Guess depends on the type of training you get before going out in the field."

And by training he meant reconditioning.

Alex snorted softly. "Twelve days at an SAS training camp, getting bullied by all the adults. Fantastic training."

And the time he spent on Malagosto.

Not that MI6 had needed to do much to get him to do what they wanted. They'd quickly realized he was driven to help people, especially if he was the only one in a position to do so, and had probably felt that was more useful than blind loyalty to Queen and Country.

"They probably have more extensive training for any adult mutants they're wanting to use. Some of the ones I met were downright... unnerving."

"Sounds like normal training to me," Zancrow said with a shrug. "Though I'm surprised they didn't have you in training all the time.

"My own training was about a year," he said. "Me and the others Master Hades personally picked." Rusty, Azuma, Kain, Ultear, and himself. Later joined by the older Zoledo and the much younger Meredy. The five of them had endured a lot under Master Hades' personal attention to make them his elite killing squad.

He hadn't thought about those times in ages. He shuddered a bit. They had not been pleasant. And he wasn't keen on sharing that with a near stranger. He cast about for a change of subject but came up blank.

"Honestly, I don't think they expected me to last a long as I did."

And half the time, neither had Alex. But he had, and he'd managed to get away. That was something, wasn't it? That at least this disease wasn't because of his involvement with MI6. They'd sent him off to die and he'd survived, only for something else to come finish the job.

"Funny. All the shite things I've been through and it's a disease that gets me."

At that, Zancrow let out a snort of laughter.

"Funny, I'm pretty sure that's how Master Hades went. All those years he planned for mutant domination, all those cities he destroyed looking for a way to achieve it, and he died from a fucking heart attack instead of being taken down by an avenger or some shit."

"How do you know the heart attack wasn't an Avenger?"

Alex's was fairly certain it wasn't, but he said it with a straight face anyway. Destroying cities? Mutant domination? Worth a karmic heart attack in his opinion, but he had a feeling him and Zancrow would not see eye to eye on that matter, so he kept it to himself.
kinofwrath: (mocking)

"Eh, I doubt it, in the grand scheme of things, Grimoire Heart never really mattered. Besides Ultear was there when died. She wouldn't have let an Avenger get past her."

Very little could get past Ultear. It was actually more likely she killed him than an avenger, now that he thought about it.
