Senator Creed enthusiastically exclaimed that the era of letting mutants go unchecked were finally going to come to an end..."

"... calling themselves the 'Mutant Liberation Front', or MLF, the campaign of vandalism and propaganda has been extensive in Europe and has started to appear in the United States and Canada as well. The MLF are most recognized by their tag sign of the double helix, along with the word LIBERATE. Most authorities are not incredibly concerned, as the group has been non-violent so far..."

Yeah, that was an example of how it's not a precedent, I'm not talking about pollution.

But actually, mutant powers can harm the environment and can kill large amounts of people in a short time, so that's something we should know about.

It's just signing up for a list. The government already has your identification number and knows things about you. So what's wrong with this?
batteredbatter: (That doesn't sound right.)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-11-14 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
You just compared it to pollution laws! I said it's not the same at all.

[He just frowns at that second part. He agrees it's dangerous if they can do that but... most mutants aren't even more dangerous than anyone with a gun would be. And given American attitudes about guns, Koshi finds that kind of ironic.]

To be honest, that part's kind of creepy too.... but anyway, there's a lot of things you don't have to tell the government. And I get the feeling from how people talk about it, they aren't going to let us just quietly register without telling the neighbors.
garganteren: (Default)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-14 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
No, I didn't. The point was that a list doesn't set a precedent for other stuff that's not a list. That's not how it works. If you say, "oh this law could lead to other completely different laws", that's just wrong. The registration act is what America wants. This is a democracy, and if you don't like something, you go out and do something about it!

So what do you have to hide from the government? They need to know who all their citizens are. How else do you think you're eligible to vote and get married?

[Do you have a problem with America? Do you? Eren looks at him fiercely as if he suspects that he does. Eren is also feeling very defensive lately.]
batteredbatter: (Upset)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-11-14 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm saying that's a bad example of it not escalating because it's a completely different issue. A lot of people already look at mutants like they're criminals.

Democracy sounds nice until you're part of a minority. And I can't vote or get married anyway. [For so many reasons!]

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-14 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
It was an example of what precedent means. Pollution has nothing to do with it. Forget I mentioned it. Saying that just because one thing happens, another thing is definitely going to happen is a fallacy. It's like saying, oh yeah, we're gonna have a list, so all mutants are going to be killed! With no basis at all for it. That's not what happens in other countries with lists.

[Sadly, arguing about these topics was the majority of what Eren learned in school. Not that he was ever the best at debating!]

A lot of mutants are criminals. That's a fact. The rate of mutant power related crimes is steadily rising.

I can't do those things either, but that's not the point. [He mostly can't do them because he just turned 14.] The point is that for the government to give you your freedoms, it has to know who you are. That's why people register for things we have immigration laws. You shouldn't just get things from the country without giving your contribution!

Oh yeah, so what's the alternative to democracy, then?
batteredbatter: (What the)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-11-14 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so I misunderstood what you meant with that.

[He still doesn't see how it's a fallacy though. He just thinks about how once you do one thing to treat mutants like they're not the same as other people, well...]

A lot of non-mutants are criminals too. There's more mutant crime because there's more mutants. You make it sound like most mutants are criminals.

It knows our names and we pay taxes - I don't see why it should have to know everything else about our lives. [The whole thing just rubs him the wrong way]

I don't know! But you can't just say something's right because a majority wants it.
garganteren: (03)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-14 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
[Eren's arguments are not always the most clear, especially as he has to make up his own arguments when shies away from the party line. It's too harsh even for him.]

It's a rise in mutant crime in which powers cause fatalities, so no matter what the reason is, it's a growing problem.

I didn't say most, I said it's a growing problem.

Just knowing who's a mutant isn't everything else.

That's how democracy works. The people vote and the majority wins. If you don't like what the majority picks, you go out and convince them to vote a different way! Sometimes you have to deal with laws you don't like. If you made everything so it was the way you want it, then you'd be a fascist.
batteredbatter: (That doesn't sound right.)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-11-14 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it's a growing problem... [He can't really deny that part.]

It's part of everything else though. Whether or not you're a mutant shouldn't have to be public knowledge.

Well, that's why we're trying to convince people not to keep acting like they need to round up all the mutants.
garganteren: (Default)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-14 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It is, and something needs to be done. I'm not saying it's the perfect solution, but right now, there are no protections in place, not for anyone.

I'll be glad to sign. It's not as if I'm a hypocrite.

That's your right. And it's my right to support the Mutant Registration Act.
batteredbatter: (Casual)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-11-14 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess so... I just think it's going to make relations between the two communities worse though.

[He sighs. Arguing like that was pretty tiring.]

Sorry about all that... I'm Koshi, by the way. Koshi Tanaka.
garganteren: (Default)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-15 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Things are going to get worse before they get better.

[After this grim pronouncement, Eren nods, seriously.

It's fine...

[He actually isn't expecting to be apologized to, so he's a little surprised and forgets to be angry for a moment.]

Eren Yeager.
batteredbatter: (Long Time No See)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-11-15 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
[He frowns, but doesn't say anything at that forecast.]

Nice to meet ya. I don't think I've seen you around... new transfer? I'm in 10th grade, you?
garganteren: (33)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-21 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't nice to meet you, but yeah, I'm new. I'm in 9th grade.

[He's a little surprised that this guy is older than he is, but you never can tell with mutants.]

I haven't been around. I don't go to class.
batteredbatter: (That doesn't sound right.)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-11-21 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
[Wow did he seriously just say that? This guy's kind of a jerk]

What, why not? You should come, some of them are really interesting!
garganteren: (39)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-21 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
[He's not going to say it's nice to be here or to meet these mutants, because it isn't. He won't be insincere!]

Because I'm boycotting everything. I'm protesting being here. I don't want to go to any of those classes. I don't trust this place.
batteredbatter: (Upset)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-11-22 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Why not? It's a really nice school! You're going to end up really far behind if you don't go to class.

[Koshi just... doesn't see what he could possibly find wrong with the school.]
garganteren: (40)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-28 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I'm a prisoner here! I've been kidnapped. It's not nice at all.

Far behind in what? Being brainwashed? No thanks. I don't recognize anyone here as an authority!
batteredbatter: (Oh shi-)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-11-28 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Really, you were kidnapped!?

[This is shocking news to Koshi.]

What happened?!
garganteren: (Default)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-28 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I was at home, with my family, and the mutants took me away from them! That's what happened. Just because I'm a mutant—it's not like I want to be. I just want to go home.
batteredbatter: (What the)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-11-29 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
The mutants... you mean the staff here? Wow, I uh, I thought all the students here were voluntarily enrolled... or here because they had no where else to go... that doesn't sound right at all.

[Like, this sounds completely crazy but at the same time he's not about to doubt Eren's story. Obviously this kid would know more about his circumstances than Koshi would.]
garganteren: (03)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-12-04 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the people who took me away here, but they were connected to this place.

No, they're not. I'm not. I don't think it's right, either. I want to go home. Or at least, to stay with people who feel the way I do.

[He doesn't want to be forced to live with his political enemies. He doesn't belong here at all.]
batteredbatter: (Upset)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-12-04 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, so like, who were you staying with before then?

[He's not entirely sure about Eren living with people who think Mutants are all dangerous criminals or something, but hey, Eren thinks that so maybe it's not too crazy?]
garganteren: (Default)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-12-04 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
My family. They adopted me when I was a kid. They've looked after me since then. I was fine with them!

[He's a little defensive, because he doesn't like people questioning his family. He loves his family. He knows that he did something bad, so... of course they were upset with him.]
batteredbatter: (That doesn't sound right.)

[personal profile] batteredbatter 2014-12-04 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
Are they still as gung-ho about the mutant registration stuff after finding out you were one?
garganteren: (Default)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-12-04 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Why wouldn't they be? I should be registered like anyone else.
