I don't think emotional investment and understanding consequences are mutually exclusive.

But extreme investment leads to ignoring consequences or simply not caring. To keep a cool head you have to know when to detach yourself, if one becomes overly invested however... that can be difficult.

Good and bad are relative, and it all really depends on the winner in and how much the end justifies the means. But I can't fault him his methods.
