A Brave New World [OPEN]

WHO: Everyone
WHAT: The news of the world, brought right to your school!
WHERE: On any television, radio, or computer screen (assuming they're on a news site)
WHEN: Today
WARNING(S): if a thread goes into warning label territory, either throw it in the subject line or take it to a separate log.

"... 5 dead, 20 injured in today's bombing in London. Authorities and witnesses both claim that it was literally impossible for the bomb to have been placed where it was unless someone had the ability to literally teleport into the terminal. Several experts are drawing this incident's blame to ex-Brotherhood assassin and terrorist only known at large as 'The Vanisher'..."

"... increased security for his upcoming public address. Now more than ever, calls are incredibly loud and clear for some kind of Mutant Registration law. Alleged mutant terrorism has spiked recently internationally, and many in the US public feel that President Kelly needs to take a leadership position on this much like he did during his congressional career..."

"... Sublime was very forthcoming with his experiences growing up in a mixed human/mutant household and the struggles it created. He also detailed his thoughts on Mutant Registration, saying that he felt like it wasn't the solution to the problem, and that humanity could only move forward if they embraced unity between humans and mutants. He went on to say that his philosophy of the Third Species suggests that there will be a time when the entire planet is mutant, and peace can come from accepting this..."

"... shook the sporting news world with his announcement that he was indeed a mutant. Delroy Garrett, Jr was stipped of the medals he'd won in the 2016 Olympics and has been panned universally for what was, essentially, cheating in some of the worlds' most coveted sports. The triathlete said that he doesn't regret coming out, and that he had to be who he was in the world today or those medals would have been truly meaningless..."

"... proposed a Mutant Olympics, as well as European United Mutant Football Club and any number of mutant specific sporting events and clubs. 'Why not?' Captain America said, firmly siding with Garrett and his supporters. 'I don't see any reason why these athletes, who have trained and worked hard to represent their countries should be denied that right based on how they were born. It just isn't right.' Rogers was also asked about the growing tension between mutant nation Genosha, whom protested the Winter Olympics this year due to the anti-mutant rulings, and the United States. Rogers refused to comment..."

I'd like to see him in person. It's hard to judge what he's like just from what's said about him on the news...but maybe if a group went to see him when he was giving a talk, we could get a better read on him.

[She'd prefer that than just guessing at whether he was good or bad.]

I've got superhuman vision and the martial arts style I practice teaches all about reading the opponent's body language. Maybe someone with superhuman scent and hearing could come, and a telepath...and then anyone else who was interested in being there.
icy_heavens: (Giving orders. Listen for a change.)

[The guy's views on mutantkind also don't sit quite right with him. And really, is saying something like, "Hey, all us normal people are going to die out and these guys you all hate will live on" supposed to actually make normals feel anything but defensive or scared? Honestly.]

[The talk of her mutation gets an interested eyebrow raise, though. That's really useful.]
Couldn't hurt to try and get a read on him. [And his cynical, strategic mind kicks in here.] And to be on guard in case everything goes to hell, like things often do.
usedforcepalm: (concerned)

[Considering Laura mentioning that hopefully there would be less kidnappings this school year and now Toushirou saying that things often go to hell, it's enough to make Hanabi look a bit concerned.]

Um...how often does that happen, on average? I'm joining martial arts club and going to Sifu Toph's combat class anyway, but my main reason for coming here was to learn how to control my powers. Should I be looking out for trouble daily like an unofficial security guard?

icy_heavens: (Shut up and do your work)

During the last year I was here the school was hit . . . maybe four times? That includes the Incident. [He's getting better at saying that without hesitation, but there's still umistakeable emphasis and bitterness on that word.]

[And yet he shrugs.]
Wouldn't say you have to go as far as that, but being alert never hurts anything.

[Four times. Enough to be concerned, but not so much that it was a constant thing. She'll have to make sure to report anything strange that she notices.]

...okay. I'm glad it's not that often, even if it shouldn't be happening at all.
icy_heavens: (Serene youth)

[personal profile] icy_heavens 2014-09-27 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Have a place full of mutants out in the open, and it's bound to attract bad attention occasionally. Shouldn't happen, but it does. [Because people in general suck.]
usedforcepalm: (side glance)

[personal profile] usedforcepalm 2014-09-30 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose.

[And now she'll change the subject to something a little more pleasant, because there isn't really much more she can add to this topic.]

How are you finding medical biology so far?
icy_heavens: (Academy)

[personal profile] icy_heavens 2014-10-01 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
[Yeah, there's really not much else to say on that.]

Not all that bad; I think I'm getting most of it without too much trouble. [And that extra study he puts in, because what's having a life?]
usedforcepalm: (fighting stance)

[personal profile] usedforcepalm 2014-10-01 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I have to work harder to study the definitions and things, but I think it's interesting.

[Pause.]

Part of the reason I wanted to take the class is because of my superhuman vision. One of the things I can do when I turn it on is see people's insides...circulatory system, internal organs, bones...

[He'd frankly find it kind of disturbing to be able to see all that, but it's all relative anyway. It's her mutation; she'll get used to that if she hasn't already. Hell, maybe people would find it disturbing that he can, in theory, freeze somebody's blood. Whereas it's not something that he dwells upon.

[He nods at the explanation.]
Makes sense to learn it, then. My mutation's got nothing to do with it; I just want to have as many bases covered as possible for when I get back in the field.
usedforcepalm: (wide eyed)

[personal profile] usedforcepalm 2014-10-06 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Luckily, I have to turn it on.

[She's grateful for that. Hanabi's hardly the sort to get easily squeamish, but it would be awkward trying to converse with people while seeing that.]

What was it like - being on a team?
icy_heavens: (Pensive)

[personal profile] icy_heavens 2014-10-08 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. Better than having it just turn on seemingly at random. [Like his had once. Like so many mutants' powers did when they manifested.]

[He frowns here, looks a little distant. How exactly does he answer this, anyway? There's too much that involves feelings, and he's never been extremely forthcoming with those.]

... A lot of hard work, but you're doing something useful. Someone's always got your back if you get into trouble . . . Even if individual members are morons sometimes. [Despite that jab at the intelligence of his old teammates, it's plain from his tone and his body language that he misses this.]
usedforcepalm: (blush)

[personal profile] usedforcepalm 2014-10-11 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
...well, they did at first. I learned how to control it enough to keep it from doing that at random on my own. Which was good because I've got energy manipulation powers, too. They're close range, but they can do a lot of damage.

[Like killing two thugs, but she'll decline to mention that part, because yuck. The faculty know and that's what's important.

She manages a slight smile after listening to his explanation of being on an X-team.
]

That sounds nice. I think I'd enjoy the challenge.
