For all of the newcomers, welcome to Professor Xavier’s Institute of Higher Learning! For all of our returning students and staff, welcome back! Once Professor Xavier’s welcome speech wraps up, it’s time for everyone to get themselves situated in their dorms and, more importantly, get to know your fellow mutants! Even if you’re not sharing rooms, you’ll still be sharing the same campus with each other, so don’t be afraid to get used to all of those new faces! Or even catch up on old ones! You have options; don’t be afraid to use them.

[ There's another moment or two of hesitation before Soren does as bid, sitting on the edge of the seat and not leaning back. He slumps a little, though. ]

... Soren.

[The scent of the cookies really is alluring, enough so that it gets Sun into the kitchen. He stares at the cookies momentarily, then he looks over to the fruit bowl that is in the kitchen too.

Decisions decisions..he starts towards the fruit bowl.]

"What, did you lose your cat up in the tree?" Comes Kaito's voice as he is standing there behind her, looking up at the tree too. Of course he's aware that they don't have a cat. He just wonders what in the world she is trying to do or see.

[shiningscales]

[Soren's response is met with a couple of clicks as Caelius turns to his computer's monitor and brings up the necessary information. Another few seconds of skimming, and then—]

Ah, I see. Well, you've come to the right place. [Really, there's notes on a few problem behaviors—mostly his trouble interacting with peers, along with his issues regarding physical mutations—but Caelius actually feels...confident in dealing with one of them.] Actually, I'm glad you chose to speak with me. It looks like there's something we have in common.

"Yes. It ran away and I suddenly gained a fear of climbing trees. It came on suddenly, I don't know what to do with myself."

She taps her hands on the bark and tries again, only her fingertips turn into pine needles and she sighs, "I'm starting to think my body doesn't like being a tree. Well. Not part of it anyways."

[vulgarcrocodile]

"Well I love your body the way it is naturally, but maybe I'm just biased." He said with some amusement in his tone, though he did get what she was saying.

"Why are you trying to become a tree? To push the boundaries of your powers?"

[ Soren gives him a look somewhere between dubious and curious. Caelius looks normal at first glance, and Soren isn't really sure what else is in his file. ]

Besides being at this school, you mean?

[gloriousandfree]

"Oh--no I can do trees, I just don't very often. Ruins clothing if I shift just like this." She brushes at her skirt and raises an eyebrow, "Though a pine tree wearing a dress would be pretty amusing. I'm trying out partial ones. A tree was just my first thought honestly. Since branches and arms...same sort of shapes sometimes."

It's been a little side project for the last year, though not much progress has been made.

"Same shape, but then you will made of bone and flesh while some parts of you are made of wood. I can kind of see why your body would be rejecting it." But that didn't mean it was impossible.

"It would be a pretty interesting sight if you did manage to do it, though." A part human and part tree person.

[gloriousandfree]

"That's why I don't think it would work. Not without a lot of tweaking. Maybe I should try a dryad. Except they're fictional so there's not exactly a lot of things to tell me how that would work out."

She shrugs and turns to lean against the tree, "Besides it's not like that would particularly useful. Turning part of me into a tree at least."

So I don't have to buy more for a while.

[Some time passes like this. Eventually, though, she breaks the silence to ask:]

What's your name?

[vulgarcrocodile]

"I guess that might depend on what you can shapeshift into. If your powers are locked in some way to what creatures are or have ever been alive." He wasn't so sure if things like Dryad's had ever walked the Earth. If not, then Maddie could potentially change herself into a dragon or some other mythical beast.

"Try giving yourself animal parts. Maybe claws or cat ears and tail or something."

[shiningscales]

If you're going to be like that, two things in common.

[He accepts that dry reply with a smile.]

Here, though— Look.

[With that said, he unbuttons the cuff of one sleeve, promptly rolling it down to his elbow. As he finishes, he holds his arm in front of himself, displaying the scales that pepper his forearm. A different color than Soren's for sure, but no less scaly.]

They gave me a lot of trouble when they first started growing in, to be honest.

"I've never tried things that don't exist to be honest. I mean I've tweaked people's appearance a little but that's hardly the same--wait right now?"

Her hands fly to her head as if there's already cat ears there.

"What if I get stuck with them?" This has never happened before but there's a first time for everything okay.

[tactlesstactician]

[ Soren refrains from being even more pedantic and listing still more superficial similarities - but even if he had been going to, any comments die on his lips when he sees the scales. His eyes widen a little, and he subconsciously reaches a hand up to touch the back of his shoulder through the sweatshirt. ]

... are there more growing in?

[shiningscales]

Not now. When I was your age— Well, it's probably similar. Just your back, right? Mine are still densest there.

[tactlesstactician]

...

[ Soren shifts a little. ]

You... don't have wings, though.

[presto_turn]

[Oh, okay, never mind. You did it, Tenma, you got him inching his eyes away and looking one-hundred percent gloomy once again.]

...I sent e-mails to most of the Raimon soccer club, a few days before my flight back. [Well. The former Raimon soccer club, since they'd all have graduated by now.] I thought that would be easier than phoning suddenly? But I've only heard back from a few of them so far; their addresses might've changed.

[And here, despite his best efforts not to look anxious, he ends up worrying his lower lip for a moment before confessing:]

Hayami thought we'd been killed or something.

Well... Our mutations are a bit different. There's a bit of shape-changing involved for me. I can't have less than this, but I can have more. [He shrugs, the gesture almost apologetic.] Like I said, when I was younger, it gave me trouble. Even if I wore long-sleeved shirts, I couldn't keep them from growing on my hands sometimes.

"Then you'll be known as Madeline Willaims, the Canadian Catgirl." Kaito too doubted that she would stay stuck like that. That has never happened before to him when he was using her ability, though he didn't do partial shifts.

"You want me to attempt it with you?"

[tactlesstactician]

[ His eyes drop to Caelius' hands for a moment. ]

... I see. Mine have just... been slowly spreading. [ His tone indicates that he's not really thrilled about that. But after a moment he looks back up. ] You have other powers?

[gloriousandfree]

"Then we can be the cat couple and people would think we were drawn to each other by our matching mutations. How romantic." She pats the spot where the ears would be again and sighs.

"Fine fine I'll try. But if I get stuck, you're explaining it to Melia."

[vulgarcrocodile]

"She'd thank me if you were stuck with cat ears and a tail, because she would think it was so cute." Which, it would be. Kaito could just imagine how many cat jokes he could make.

He reached over to her and took both of her hands. "Let's concentrate, then."

[soccerwhisperer]

[Misery loves company. But Tenma feels the shift in Shindou's mood, and tries to divert that sadness.]

Hayami-senpai said that? I would have thought Hamano-senpai would have.

[He pauses for a second.]

I called everyone in my year--er, I mean everyone who was in my year. They were all surprised. But can you believe Tsurugi had the nerve to say I was still a shrimp?
