For all of the newcomers, welcome to Professor Xavier’s Institute of Higher Learning! For all of our returning students and staff, welcome back! Once Professor Xavier’s welcome speech wraps up, it’s time for everyone to get themselves situated in their dorms and, more importantly, get to know your fellow mutants! Even if you’re not sharing rooms, you’ll still be sharing the same campus with each other, so don’t be afraid to get used to all of those new faces! Or even catch up on old ones! You have options; don’t be afraid to use them.

I dunno, I expected an institution, not a mansion! I mean, "The Xavier Institute" sounds cold, no matter what they follow it up with.

[He looks around the room and heads over to the window to check out the view. They're as lavish as the school itself.]

I hear The Big X pays for the students who can't afford tuition, too. Guy must be swimming in dough.

[Kanji frowns for a moment at that first comment. Honestly, he'd never really thought of it like that... coming over to look, too.]

Yeah. How d'ya manage to build a place like this? An' hell, I don't think I've seen half of it...

[And he's just talking about the mundane areas.]

You know what I wanna find? The garage. I bet the X-men have some suh-weet wheels hidden around here somewhere.

[Not that he really knows anything about cars. There's no way there aren't some seriously cool looking beasts hidden somewhere around here, though.]

[...Making a good point there. But Kanji thinks he knows how these things work.]

That stuff's probably all locked down. They ain't gonna let us anywhere near it.

Oh... Yeah. Laaame.

[Garfield's ears droop in disappointment. He can worm his way into most places, but who knows what kind of security would be waiting for him there. Kanji's hard truths deflate his enthusiasm enough to drag him away from the window and toss his suitcase onto the bed that's furthest from the other guy's stuff. He drops the box there, too, and sits down beside it.]

The name's Beast Boy. Who're you?

[Really, dude? That intro gets a bit of a skeptical look. But he's not going to start things over that, at least -]

Name's Kanji Tatsumi.

[C'mon, Kanji, you're still going by your civilian name? Next you'll say you don't have a custom uniform on under those clothes!]

Soooo. Do you like video games? What's your mutation? Is it cool if this is my bed? Do you eat tofu?

[Kanji's current idea of 'custom uniform' is 'puts his jacket over his shoulders'. He's so new to this business, okay?]

Uh... [Blink.] Some of 'em, electrical generation, sure, and yeah...?

[All good answers! He straightens up suddenly, as though an idea just occurred to him.]

You're Japanese, right? Do you read manga?

[Did I forget to mention he's a bit of a weeaboo?]

[Hoooboy. He just looks a spot bemused for a moment before shrugging.]

Well, yeah. I ain't exactly a big comics guy, but there's a couple I do...

[Wrong answer. He's already diving into the box on the bed beside him. He pulls out a messy armful of shonen issues. His taste is pure, predictable mainstream.]

[Should have expected that, dammit. Shaking his head -]

[His ears droop, but his enthusiasm rebounds again.]

So what stuff are you into?

Sorry, man. I kinda prefer stories with - dunno, more character stuff in it.

[And the occasional 'adventures of cute animals doing cute things' but like hell is he going to admit to that yet.]

Here, lemme get a couple out. Some'a this stuff ain't got a translation, though.

[That's pretty sweet, actually. He's so gonna borrow those and look at the pictures. And make Kanji explain the story.]

Hey, though-my books totally have character stuff! You wouldn't believe how heavy everything gets in issue 152.

[Okay, got him curious there.]

An' I never thought of this stuff that way. It's mostly just the series I used to read back home. [Shrugging-] It's a pain in the ass to find, though.

[He grabs a book and flips through it until he finds a spiky-haired character. He points him out to Kanji]

Okay, right, so this guy? His entire village got wiped out by some bad dudes who didn't even have a good reason for it. Issue 152, he finally catches up with those guys after like, a whole decade. And it turns out, his parents, they made a deal so his sister and him wouldn't get killed. It turns out she ended up joining up with those guys, and now they gotta fight! Except-spoilers-in the end, this guy's best friend, he talks to the sister instead and tells the truth about what happened. Our man here, he got himself all ready, but at the last moment his sister betrays those guys she's been with for years and he's got a family again! The bad guys get away, then they have to decide what next. He's spent his whole life chasing those guys down, but now he has something more important. But now she wants to make them pay for what they did, and suddenly he's the guy who's trying to hold someone back, for the first time ever. It's like, a complete flip from how things were since the beginning!

[Did you get all that? Whatever it all was, Beast Boy seems to think it's the best story ever, and 100% pure character stuff.]

[He caught ... half of that? It kind of swept over him. Regardless, he nods, a little thoughtful by comparison to his norm.]

Huh. Didn't know 'bout that bit, man.

You can borrow it whenever you want! I only bought the best issues, so it'll be like reading the highlight reel of the whole story. I read allll the rest online.

[He seems pretty pleased about how sneaky he is.]
