For all of the newcomers, welcome to Professor Xavier’s Institute of Higher Learning! For all of our returning students and staff, welcome back! Once Professor Xavier’s welcome speech wraps up, it’s time for everyone to get themselves situated in their dorms and, more importantly, get to know your fellow mutants! Even if you’re not sharing rooms, you’ll still be sharing the same campus with each other, so don’t be afraid to get used to all of those new faces! Or even catch up on old ones! You have options; don’t be afraid to use them.

He's certainly somewhat relieved--and that answers one of the questions he had in mind--and chuckles at Bender, as he accepts Toph's hand, shaking it firmly but not aggressively.

"Your understanding's appreciated, Miss Beifong. What sort of combat training is it that you teach, if I may? And, ah, your friend is..?"

"Just Toph, unless you're in class. Then it's Sifu." Good, a firm handshake. "I think I'm mostly working with the ones who don't know anything, maybe the ones interested in martial arts. And that's Bender, my dog." "Seeing-eye" is of course implied. The gray film over her eyes is pretty obvious, after all.

Yeah. He's picked up on that. He also smiles to himself a little more at the use of that title--he's used to a traditionalist approach to training, so if anything that's a bit familiar.

"Ah... as you wish, Miss Toph. My grandfather started me on martial arts--classical, European, that is--as a way to develop the discipline to control my, ah... 'gift'. I look forward to integrating whatever lessons I can from the styles you practice."

He glances down.

"And, a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Bender."

Bender just barks.

"What can you do?" Toph asks. If he's in her class, she should probably figure out what he can do so she can adjust plans as necessary.

"Ah, well, I imagine nothing I ought to bring to class..."

He grins to himself sheepishly at that, audible in his voice, and scratches at the back of his head.

"It's, ah... plasma generation, I suppose." He pauses briefly, then adds, "I'm still getting used to putting a name on it. It's always simply been the thing that I do, at home."

Toph just blinks.

"What generation?" Science was never her strongest suit, okay?

He's not really a scientist as such, himself... but he is very well educated, and has a bit of a Peter the Great talent for digging into all sorts of technical subjects.

"..ah.. plasma. Ionized gas, very hot, vaporizes... very nearly anything, really. Like..."

He trails off because obviously Star Wars references aren't going to have a whole lot of traction with someone who can't see movies. But he only pauses a beat before continuing with a different analogy.

"Like fire, I suppose, but hotter, more intense, and... in some ways, at least, more controllable."

"Like a lightsaber?"

They do make movies with assistance for the visually impaired, and she made her ex explain what was going on the television before she moved out. She has totally "seen" Star Wars.

...oh. Hm. OK, that works. Not quite what he was expecting, but lesson learned. Don't underestimate the things Toph is familiar with. He actually quite pleased--he likes being pleasantly surprised.

"Oh. Ah... yes, I suppose, now that you mention it, something like that."

He answers with a bit of modesty in his voice--after all, with their popularity, it seems like a bit of a self-aggrandizing claim to say you make lightsabers.

That's a good lesson to learn early on, yes.

Toph just grins. "You are officially the coolest kid in this school," she jokes. "Who hasn't wanted a lightsaber?!"

He blinks at that and laughs lightly, a little caught off guard.

"..a-... ah, well... thank you, at any rate, Miss Toph. No mind tricks, though, I'm afraid, or telekinesis. I imagine those might be more useful, honestly... but, ah... what about yourself, if you don't mind my asking?"

In response, Toph stops and brings up a section of the ground, shaping it into a star.

"Earth manipulation. Pretty handy when you're walking around and trying to avoid gopher holes."

"Oh..! Fascinating... do you... do you merely reshape it, or can you move any bit of earth it at will..?"

Well he's certainly intrigued at that. He has a very solid grasp on the basics, at least, of his power, but this is something totally new.

Toph sends the star of earth flying into a tree not too far away, shattering it and sending dirt clods flying. Bender jumps, still not used to having an owner who could do that. "That answer your question?"

Alric's a little startled, himself--it's a bit more of a grandiose display than he might have expected from her, but those are the joys of getting to know Toph. He's at least amused by it, rather than bothered.

"...ah. ...yes, Miss Toph, I believe so. Very impressive display, I might add."

"I know." She just sort of smirks, not at all modest about her awesome powers. "Anyway, yeah. That's what I do. Bender doesn't do anything, though, except make sure I trip over her every time I stand up. Don't you, girl?" Even as she complains, Toph bends down to scratch Bender's ears.

"Mm... well, I suppose we all have our duties to perform."

It's said joking, of course, since being constantly underfoot isn't exactly what most people would call a duty.

Toph laughs. "I guess. Anyway, I'll see you when classes start?"

While she can't see his smile, of course, it's there in his voice, as well.

"Mm, yes, I suppose so. I'll look forward to it, Miss Toph."
