Beast Boy has no idea what a funkiller Liir is. He is become sadsack, destroyer of fun. The wiggle was a reflex.

He does have to admit that's a good point though. "...Alright. Where are you from? Sorry, these are rude questions."

He gives the stranger a long, appraising stare. Who is this guy? He's always up for playing along, but he's got some questions of his own. "That's kind of a complicated question," he points out. "I'm American, even if I I've barely spent any time here. My turn! What's your deal, dude?"

The pop quiz is kind of fun, but some context wouldn't hurt.

Yes, he's not exactly good at teasing these things out subtlely, is he?

"...Never been to Oz? You see I..." He blushed a little green himself. It seemed so embarrassing saying it out loud. "...thought we might be related."

"Um, I kinda doubt it..." That sucks a little of the enthusiasm out of him. His whole family is dead, Liir, jeez. He sounds more confused than anything. "I don't even know where Oz is. Why'd you think that?"

"My mother was green. And I can imitate animals. It was a fairly stupid mistake, and I'm sorry."

He looks a little contrite, though it's hardly the worst thing he has to apologize for.

"Whoa, hey! Don't be sorry! That's totally cool!" He offers a grin, trying to bring some wind back into the stranger boy's sails. This is a guy who takes life a little too seriously, he can already tell. Ear wiggle aside.

"Who knows? Maybe we're like, cousins or something? It's not like I know where my family's from-for all I know, mom or dad had a long lost brother or sister somewhere." He shrugs. "It would be pretty wild if we had the same last name."

Beast Boy has no idea how too seriously Liir takes life.

"...Ko." He says after a long pause. He can't exactly tell a near stranger that he's the love child of a semi-famous insurgent, even if he probably doesn't even know who she is. "Liir Ko. They...never told you?" First the guy who doesn't know his own birthday, now this. A lot of unknown parentage here.

"No good. Too bad, dude. I'm- uh," he hesitates. It would probably be rude to introduce himself by codename after he asked Liir for his own real name, but he goes by Beast Boy for a reason. He settles on a compromise. "I'm Gar, but call me Beast Boy. I wasn't big on family history back when they were around. I knew home was America, but it wasn't like I'd ever been here, you know? And I have no idea if they lived their whole lives here, or moved in, or what."

Talking about his parents is bringing up feelings in him that he'd sooner not deal with, but snubbing this guy isn't really an option. Anyway, he didn't miss that Liir spoke of his own mother in the past tense, too.

"Hmm..." Well, that was something to consider. But as far as he knew, Elphaba had never been to America.

Oh, he was supposed to say other things here. But he was drawing a blank on exactly what. He'd never gotten the hang of small talk.

On the other hand, Beast Boy is an endless fount of talk, big or small. It's in his nature. The pause in conversation lasts for only a moment before he jumps in. "So what's Oz like? Is it more cool about mutants like your mom and me than America?"

Politics! Beast Boy had found the one subject guaranteed to make the normally taciturn Liir open up at least a little. He rubbed his beardless chin.

"More...primitive, you might say. There's still places where they think we're witches, things like that. Less so in the more industrialized parts. But the prejudice is more from a desire to exploit our talents or peasant backwardness than hatred of mutants per se."
tofudog: (feelin fine)

[personal profile] tofudog 2014-09-18 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, this guy talks like a total brainiac. Who even says 'per se?' Beast Boy isn't even sure what it means. He's impressed and amused in equal parts.

"So they're not gonna be blowing up mutant school anytime soon, but only because we're too useful or too scary?" It doesn't sound great, but that still makes it better than this country just a few years ago. "Where is it, anyway? Europe somewhere?"

Being ashamed of his ignorance doesn't even occur to him. Why would it?
friendofdorothy: (soaw1)

[personal profile] friendofdorothy 2014-09-19 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Liir grew up among old books and incomprehensible, disturbing experiments. It'd be strange if he talked any different.

"Yes, I suppose so...It's in the North Pacific, between Hawai'i and Alaska...Where are you from?"

He's not making small talk. He wants to know where someone could grow up and not know where whole countries are.

He shrugs. "We all moved a lot. I'm pretty sure I was born here, but when I was a kid mom and dad moved us all out into the jungle. Then another one, somewhere else, and so on. They did sciency stuff." He nods wisely. Apparently his parents didn't manage to impart much appreciation for their academics in their son.

"My team has been operating out of Brazil for a few years, so I guess our secret base is home? Until I quit, anyway. And now I'm here!" He grins, hands on hips. Not bad for a 30 second life story.
