For all of the newcomers, welcome to Professor Xavier’s Institute of Higher Learning! For all of our returning students and staff, welcome back! Once Professor Xavier’s welcome speech wraps up, it’s time for everyone to get themselves situated in their dorms and, more importantly, get to know your fellow mutants! Even if you’re not sharing rooms, you’ll still be sharing the same campus with each other, so don’t be afraid to get used to all of those new faces! Or even catch up on old ones! You have options; don’t be afraid to use them.

"Hah. There hasn't exactly been a lot of opportunity for those since that one," she observed with a low chuckle.

"Not with the Phoenix Incident. Too much of the building was wrecked. Also, I'm pretty sure Xavier's got a spare alarm on the actual building in case someone tries that again. You'll need to head out further next time."

She paused. "And it's Doctor Caimbeulach now. Or just Carlyn."

"I didn't go to that one, I was a good girl and went to play piano. Just got to suffer through the punishment everyone else had. Glad I didn't miss much while I was gone."

Maya turned her attention to the building, eyes closed and extending her powers to feel for the low electrical hums connecting to the alarm boxes. She'll have to brush up on how to bypass alarms if she wanted her own attempt at a party here.

She made a note of the change of title, "What brings you out here, if there aren't any keggers going on?"

"I suspect about the same thing that brought you out here," Carlyn responded. "Scouting good outdoor places to read, for when I need a little quiet."

"It's okay. I mean, it's quieter, the beehive might give me some problems if I were to try and work on things out here..." actual quiet was rather impossible for Maya, so she settled for the least annoying sounds. The beehive was far enough off into the trees it probably wasn't even heard by anyone else.

"I'm mostly freaked out by how much this is and isn't my first day of school, I needed a break from everyone." Which she said with a rather alarming ease to herself. But she was out where it was relatively quiet and isolated. The perfect feeling for her, really.

Carlyn nodded - she remembered how detailed Maya's hearing was, even beyond just her manipulation powers.

"I... Yeah. I can understand that feeling, kinda, I think. It's an odd thing."

"Everyone, everything sounds different. From the hum of various electrical systems, to the voices missing from the campus, to the people here aging and changing since I was last here. It's all new... but not."

Maya felt sound in a way so deep that in her darker moods she felt the rest of the world was deaf. The same mood that made Magneto's mad power speeches make sense to her... it was scary how much she thought like this now. "Probably not the only one of the kids feeling this way, am I?"

"... It's not just the kids, trust me. It's been years since this place was actually operating. It's... It's basically a new school, built on the ruins of a horrifying incident. Never mind that the old stories are starting to come back..."

"I guess it helps I'm not alone," No matter how alone she felt.

"So how bad was the aftermath? I'm still catching up on things. And after Miss. Gray... I only remember a handful of sounds."

"Well, the good news, is the Sentinel junk stopped after that. Too many destroyed, and it came out that two of their makers had been planning to sell them to enemies of the US, which pretty well scuttled things. Also, photos of scared, innocent teenagers tends to buy sympathy fast. Bad news is, that only lasted so long. Plus we had to rebuild the school after that, since it was pretty well wrecked."

"I noticed the rebuilding part, I figured it had something to do with one of the times the school got attacked and everyone nearly died. Still haven't figured out how my cello survived everything... just glad it did, really."

The dorms simply weren't as high priority a target as the X-Men... That said, you still got quite lucky.
