For all of the newcomers, welcome to Professor Xavier’s Institute of Higher Learning! For all of our returning students and staff, welcome back! Once Professor Xavier’s welcome speech wraps up, it’s time for everyone to get themselves situated in their dorms and, more importantly, get to know your fellow mutants! Even if you’re not sharing rooms, you’ll still be sharing the same campus with each other, so don’t be afraid to get used to all of those new faces! Or even catch up on old ones! You have options; don’t be afraid to use them.

He glanced back over his shoulder at the sound of the voice-- there didn't seem to be anyone else he would be addressing, at that particular moment.

"I've had everything from complete beginners to well-trained prodigies. Odds are you fit into the range somewhere."

"I don't know if I'd call myself a prodigy." Which isn't to say that Leonardo doesn't know he's good, damned good, but he's also worked hard and put in a lot of blood and sweat to get as good as he is. (Tears, not so much, because leaders don't cry, at least in Leo's still admittedly teenaged and thus sometimes unreasonable line of thought.)

"But what I know has been the difference between living and dying." That's a slightly better way to try and explain himself to a teacher than I get into a lot of street fights and battles with mysterious gangs of ninja, right?

Honestly, he could explain about the ninja, and it would hardly top the list of strange things he'd heard and witnessed over half a lifetime at Xavier's. Some people had mysterious gangs of ninja assailants, and that was just a reality of the world he lived in. Hijikata looked him over, appraising.

"If you're willing to put in the work, I can teach you."

He can't help but straighten up a little under that gaze (as if he didn't already have pretty great posture, but there's always room to do anything better, as far as Leo's concerned). It feels a little like being appraised by Master Splinter, albeit with a little more distance, but even with that it's more than enough to make him feel like this guy ought to be taken more seriously.

"I wasn't expecting to get better by doing nothing."

That was a good reaction. The boy had will, but also willingness to be taught and in the end those were perhaps the two most important indicators of future success.

"Good. You'll get more out of it, with an attitude like that." The students he liked best shared one trait with him -- an ambition to improve themselves, strong enough that they'd work themselves to the bones for it.

Working himself to the bones is Leo's specialty.

"Have you set times to meet yet, or just the days?"

"I'll need to work out everyone's availability first. Have you got an idea yet of what times would be convenient for you?"

[kamiizumi]

"I mostly have morning classes, so on those days...I think I'm pretty good for any time after two."

[koukai_kirai]

"Well, then." Since he's planning on meeting after school, that shouldn't be a problem.

"I'll be making a public announcement when the time is determined."

[kamiizumi]

"I'll watch for it." He has a few other questions, but they seem better suited for the first day than for now, so he holds back on those and just half-nods, half-bows, instead.

[koukai_kirai]

Hijikata returns the half-bow, and goes on his way.
