For all of the newcomers, welcome to Professor Xavier’s Institute of Higher Learning! For all of our returning students and staff, welcome back! Once Professor Xavier’s welcome speech wraps up, it’s time for everyone to get themselves situated in their dorms and, more importantly, get to know your fellow mutants! Even if you’re not sharing rooms, you’ll still be sharing the same campus with each other, so don’t be afraid to get used to all of those new faces! Or even catch up on old ones! You have options; don’t be afraid to use them.

"I guess I kind of messed that up... didn't mean to come on so strong," Ugh. Way to completely ruin the moment Bridget.

Unfortunately, it's rare that Beast Boy, left to his own devices, says anything worth eavesdropping on. Liir probably hears the word "dude" about a hundred times, plenty of people asking what his problem is, and a lot of impish cackling when someone looks over during the split second between teenage boy and cockroach and spits out their drink.

He's no super soldier, either, but when it comes to people paying attention to him, Beast Boy's instincts are unparalleled. He feels eyes on him and whips around with a grin, searching for his audience. It's hard to tell who exactly was staring, but only one person in this room seems conspicuously idle and has suspiciously well adapted ears for snooping, something Beast Boy knows more than a little about. Anyway, if he's got the wrong guy, who cares? He'll meet someone new.

"What's up, dude?" he calls out, waving.

"God, don't think I haven't thought about it."

He makes a little face. Not going out with guys he thinks are losers would mean really conspicuously not going out with anyone, and like, that would look like giving up, wouldn't it?

"There is no acceptable reason, certainly. But tomorrow? Do you plan on doing it every day. Perhaps having a guardian would be worse for the reputation."

The other kid's reputation, that is.

"Must a person always want something?" He took a break to chug a bit more out of his can, burp, and give a soft apology in Portuguese.

"Being social is a key tenant of a solid team, I say. All I am in want of is words, I suppose."

That's the question, isn't it?

Souji is well aware that he wants to know everything, wants to pick the concept of anyone loving Okita Souji this much apart and study the components, as if truth is some kind of tangible matter that can be found if you look hard enough.

It's greedy, and selfish. He's not ashamed as such, but he can still make the choice not to ask for something like that, so he doesn't. Instead he turns his gaze back to the photo album as if drawn to it, flicking a couple of pages at random. There he is again, maybe fifteen or so and wearing some sort of training gear, disheveled and sweaty and asleep on the grass, as if he'd been resting after practice of some kind and had simply drifted off. The next picture is awkwardly angled, as he's clearly holding the camera himself, laughingly pointing at Hijikata, who appears to be asleep over a desk with an ink stain on his cheek - revenge, perhaps, for the first picture.

"It looks like I was around quite a lot. Didn't you ever grow tired of me? I'm a pretty exhausting person to have around, that's what everyone says. Or does it just look that way in the pictures, and I wasn't really... with you all the time?"

"Very true. I mean, it's not stopping me from trying different ways to do the same thing. Powers are funny like that. Sometimes you have to work around them to get them to do what you want."

She pats the tree and shakes her head, "So is yours simply the wings--and well, the eyes? If you don't mind my asking."

That's a good room to be in! When you get back from classes or soccer practice, you can just turn the corner and fall on your bed. My room os Room three on the second floor, so I have a few more steps.

[Tenma playfully bumps him lightly in response]

Yeah! It just feels a little funny. How can some things be so familiar but so different at the same time?

"Just remember not to show any weakness to the students and they won't 'ave anything to exploit," she shrugs, as if that's the most natural mindset any teacher should have regarding their pupils.

[ This is going nowhere fast, so Soren looks away and starts walking off again, considering this the end of the conversation. ]

I went and stared at my bookshelf and then just picked a high school textbook at random

The Unfinished Nation. . . . it's one of the history textbooks.

"Then why haven't you done it, doofus."

Waiting isn't giving up, its waiting.

Wait, you're from a famous country like that, but you've never seen it? How's that work?

[She has her suspicions, but she'll let Palutena answer first.]

"Are you..." Are you aware that you're dressed like some kind of mutated peacock?

She takes a moment to pause.

"I'm sorry, but I was under the impression that what you're wearing is not appropriate school attire." Accent high-five. She's clearly not from around here, so she doesn't know the Institute's exciting history of men in skirts.

Oh. I'm sorry.

...Well, I've brought tea. You are free to take some if you think it will help you sleep.

[Surely it can't be much harder than holding anything else. Right?]

[Shindou lets the contact from Tenma shift him slightly back, leaning him in to one side. He's keeping himself from turning gloomy again, even on this particular topic...but with such composure that it's clearly taking a conscious effort.]

I know. It's jarring, seeing how so much has changed. How much everyone's moved on while we were like that.

I feel like I don't even know half of what we've missed yet.

Well... If you need any help, our powers are kinda similar. Maybe we can work together on it?

[Offering help like this is awkward, but Aki feels like it's worth it, anyway.]

... Oh bugger. American history. My dad only briefly touched on it, and usually only in the context of advancements in science and engineering.

Keeping secrets isn't much fun, anyway, so you're not missing much.

[She laughs again, shaking her head wryly. She might be speaking from experience, but there's no noticeable bitterness, at least.]

In case you need an alibi for when you sneak around later, since you seem the type, you should know at least one name. I'm Aki.

[He straightens up entirely as Soren steps inside, flipping his notebook shut and gesturing toward the chair that has been stationed across from him, at the other side of his desk.]

Take a seat, then, please. [If it's someone whose been asked to see him, he almost certainly has a file with pertinent information, so he asks:] May I have your name?

"I see."

Caelius is an emotionally perceptive sort of person, but even so, he didn't know Hijikata well enough before—before things happened to be able to say whether he's just distant by nature, or if there's something more to it. The answer might not be any of his business, anyway.

"Perhaps I should leave you to it, then. I didn't mean to have disturbed you."

Mm. I didn't attend school most of my life, so I'm mostly just trying to get caught up on things I would have learned here. [ here being America. ]
