For all of the newcomers, welcome to Professor Xavier’s Institute of Higher Learning! For all of our returning students and staff, welcome back! Once Professor Xavier’s welcome speech wraps up, it’s time for everyone to get themselves situated in their dorms and, more importantly, get to know your fellow mutants! Even if you’re not sharing rooms, you’ll still be sharing the same campus with each other, so don’t be afraid to get used to all of those new faces! Or even catch up on old ones! You have options; don’t be afraid to use them.

And Maya was doing so well at dodging people from her past. There was something to be said about her approval of what Feliks had on... she did have a thing for teals and pinks (generally not at the same time though). But for the moment she just didn't want to deal with the way people saw her, so she paused in a moment of trying to decide between 'go talk to him,' 'pray he doesn't see you,' and 'run away like a coward.'

Of course, Maya can't turn invisible, the fact that Feliks wouldn't hear her would be great if she hadn't walked into view in front of him. She didn't hear anything that specifically separated him from the crowd while his parents left, so she didn't know to go a different direction. She finally decided to just, turn around on the spot and try to be somewhere else than here.

It was too late -- he had spotted her already, looking like a phantom with her headphones and the too-familiar frames of her glasses.

"Maya?"

He hurried to catch up, moving pretty quickly for a guy in shoes that impractical. Something was different somehow, though -- something was weird. Or rather, nothing was different, and it was weird. He was pretty sure he'd seen her in that same top before, a million years ago.

"You're back! It's been ages!"

Sometimes her powers gave her trouble, like never being able to say 'sorry, I didn't hear you.' Unless she was actively trying to listen four different sound sources at once and she tuned out everything else. Since she wasn't double checking multiple audio files at once that was rather useless to her. So she stopped and turned on her heel abruptly, "I never left. And I've been told how long it's been."

Wow, someone woke up on the wrong side of the decade.

"Right, I bet they did." Good thing, too, Feliks didn't want to be the one who had to have THAT conversation.

"But it's way good to see you again, is the point!"

It's certainly possible to keep being in a bad mood in the face of Feliks's relentless positivity -- at times, it's even easier, if you find it grating. But that attitude of his is as untouchable as it was when they were teenagers, if not even more so.

"You say that now, I'm an old friend you haven't seen in forever. It won't last, it'll get weird. I'll ask about something that I should know if I wasn't playing Briar Rose."

She's used to it, it starts out good and then something has changed, its always something, and then it's all awkward silences and desperately avoiding the topic. And she doesn't mind, she doesn't want to hear everyone's stories after the fact. Like it's some high school reunion she's too young to get drunk at!

She is doing a remarkable job holding onto all of the pain she's gotten. "Who else is still here? So many people sound different."

Someone else might be upset, or might look at her with pity. Feliks? Feliks has never had time for getting dragged down, but he's also not the sort to leave with his good mood and let someone he likes be sad alone.

"Yeah, 'cause I care so much about awkward. So you ask, I tell you, we get over it!"

He thinks about it-- who's still here, who's still here... "Fai and Yuui, duh. I heard Reimu's coming back, too, and like, Toph's a teacher now, and that Toshirou kid woke up, too? Some of the professors are still around, too, like Dr. McCoy and Professor Abs."

Which is Fai's completely appropriate name for Hijikata.

Maya may have openly cringed at the idea of running into Reimu. Not that she had anything against him, but your ex now being old enough there are serious legal concerns about fraternization is not something she wants to consider, explain, or deal with.

Most of them were teachers now, and Toto was even younger than her. Sure, he might get the situation but... he was about as fun as licking a frozen lamppost. So she stuck with taking Feliks at his word, "And you and Fai, if I were to ask about the last five years you'd tell me..?"

Oops. In his defense, he didn't know you two had a thing -- it was a little before his time, perhaps, or just off his radar.

"Anything! I mean, anything you'd actually wanna ask, and that we know."

And apparently, 5 years after everything, Feliks is still at least close enough with Fai to feel comfortable answering for him as a 'we'.

"I mean are you two together? And how much trouble did Fai get into in the past five years?"

The 'we' was still fairly hopeful, but Maya's got this terrible relationship with hope she doesn't want to deal with. So she just waits for the skinny on what happened to all her friends.

That was precisely what Feliks was hoping to avoid having to answer.

"Huh? I, uh... oh, wow, seriously?"

He laughs, like that's going to convince Maya after some of the things she's heard.

"No way, he's like my best friend! And about as much as you think. He got a tramp stamp, and he's dated like half the losers in New England 'cause he's like a magnet for them, and I haven't seen him in about a million years 'cause he spent all summer studying some kind of science-y stuff on some island somewhere?"

"I could replay exactly what you two were like? I do remember in vivid detail, and could give it to you in surround sound."

She focused on teasing, because focusing on how sad all that sounded. The half the losers in New England bit anyway, as that was clearly Fai trying to prove something to himself. Everything else just sounded like Fai, especially the tramp stamp. "You'll also have to describe the tattoo... and tell me if he accidentally blew up the island at all."

"I--I don't think you have to-- I mean, we're the same as always, you know?" He doesn't want to know exactly how he sounded. He already knows exactly what he would hear in his own voice, and what Fai never seems to hear or has the decency to pretend he doesn't.

"Anyway, the island was still there when I visited like 6 weeks ago. I guess I can't really make any promises about more recently, though? His science stuff does get kinda explodey sometimes. The tramp stamp... It's his old code name. He's 'Glamour' now, FYI."

This is the face of a girl that is not calling you a doofus really loudly in her mind because Feliks and Fai are clearly morons when it comes to each other. Cause, to Maya, 'the same as always' means clearly not able to make the obvious move of going out with each other like adults, which you two are now so you have no excuses!

"Of course he would pick a stripper name for his codename, I shouldn't even be a little surprised."

Feliks is so very, very used to ignoring precisely that face. People have been giving it to them constantly for 5 years and a bit, after all!

He laughs at her comment, though, in a big, sudden burst that he struggles (and fails) to get under control. "I know, right? It's like, I told him that, but he totally didn't take me seriously!" Because he'd clearly been joking, probably.

"Or he did it on purpose," Maya shrugged, it was just as likely. Fai was about as shameless as they come after all. "So if you and Fai are just friends, any special guy in your life?"

Maya was trying to be polite, but all the catching up just made it worse.

"I mean, that could totally have been a thing. He did look kinda smug." But he did that anyway, sometimes.

"And... no, not so much? I just, like, haven't met anyone fierce enough to handle me yet!" He smiled, bright, used to that lie. "I go on dates sometimes, but I'm still looking around."

Fai's general default was smug. Figuring out the actual smugness from the presentation of smugness was the issue.

"Well, I was frozen for five years, so there aren't any real updates on my dating situation. You have to have better than 'dates sometimes.'"

Feliks knows the difference, instinctively. He knows Fai better than several actual telepaths that they've been acquainted with.

"And I don't know, none of them were really worth telling you about? There haven't actually been any second dates so far, that's how lame most of them were."

Not a single second date. He's 22 now.

"Most? Not all of them? What about the ones that weren't lame like 'most?'"

Word choices, they matter. Maya's very big on what people say. And she was looking for a better explanation for 22 and no second dates is.

For a few moments, he really tries to figure out if there were some of them that he would classify as 'less lame'. He considers this for as long as he can stand to (a few seconds), then shakes his head.

"Okay, all of them were lame!"

"Stop going out with losers."

Practical advice from a practical girl whose had zero luck with boys in her life.

"God, don't think I haven't thought about it."

He makes a little face. Not going out with guys he thinks are losers would mean really conspicuously not going out with anyone, and like, that would look like giving up, wouldn't it?

"Then why haven't you done it, doofus."

Waiting isn't giving up, its waiting.

God, he wishes he were talking about anything but this.

"Oh, you know -- like, they say someone's out there for everyone, you just have to keep looking, right?"

Try not to think too hard on that. Feliks does!

"If it's that narrow odds, I probably missed them during my little nap. And now their dating me would be illegal."
