For all of the newcomers, welcome to Professor Xavier’s Institute of Higher Learning! For all of our returning students and staff, welcome back! Once Professor Xavier’s welcome speech wraps up, it’s time for everyone to get themselves situated in their dorms and, more importantly, get to know your fellow mutants! Even if you’re not sharing rooms, you’ll still be sharing the same campus with each other, so don’t be afraid to get used to all of those new faces! Or even catch up on old ones! You have options; don’t be afraid to use them.

[After checking out his room, meeting his roommate, and putting away the very few things he actually bothered to bring, Leonardo's next order of business is to get working on that first rule of Getting Crap Done, Ninja Style: know the territory.

Which means a long walk around the courtyard and the grounds.

Which also means a lot of hopping into trees and looking at it from above, because the more angles the better, and a perfectly good hiding place is always worth looking into ahead of time. Just in case.

You might catch him while he's on the ground and wandering like a normal person. You might just as likely catch him jumping into a tree, jumping out of a tree, jumping between trees, or otherwise taking the least orthodox route to "taking a walk around the grounds."

(You're only catching him because right now, he isn't trying. Meeting people...is still a thing he knows he ought to be doing, after all.)]

Once the moving-in is generally done, Leo might meet Alric in a rather unexpected fashion: sitting in the branches of one of the trees he leaps into.

Alric himself is somewhat startled, sitting up somewhat and bracing himself against the limb and the trunk, one hand raised defensively, the other stretched out as though ready to strike or.... do something. Whatever it was going to be, though, he stops himself short.

"..kh.. ....oh.. er, hello."

Fortunately, he'd seen this fellow before, during the general move-in, and though a little surprised at him suddenly landing among the branches, at least doesn't have that "first time seeing a green person" reaction to work out. He does wonder to himself whether it's appropriate to make a joke about Leo mixing up his turtle powers and his bird powers, but decides it's best at least to save that sort of thing until they're better acquainted.

Oops.

That? That was not smooth.

"Uh, sorry, I...didn't really look to see if the trees were occupied first." Which was clearly a gross oversight and lack of planning on his part, and Leo's giving himself a good hard mental smack for that. He's supposed to be the one who actually plans for these things!

"Ah.. no, it's quite all right," he chuckles, holding up a soothing gesture with the hand he'd previously raised in a defensive reflex. "I imagine you'd have every reason to expect the trees would be unoccupied. I, ah.. noticed you, earlier, when everyone was moving in, but I don't believe me met properly."

He offers a hand, leaning toward Leo to do so, and casually swinging his other hand back to rest against the trunk for support. Apparently he's comfortable chilling in trees.

"I'm Alric, new student."

Leo reaches over to shake that hand with an easy grace; despite still being half-crouched on a tree branch with now only one hand free isn't the most stable of positions to be in, he's not a bit worried about losing his balance. Perching in awkward positions in high places is an occupational hazard.

"Leonardo, likewise."

Alric certainly notes it, smiling and shaking his hand firmly. Turtle, bird, and now cat.

"I see... it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Leonardo. Can't say I've ever met an American Leonardo, before. If it's not prying too much, were you named for a relative, or...?"

"My brothers and I were all named after Renaissance artists. I'm...not quite sure where that idea came from, honestly."

It probably clashes a bit with the (very Japanese) surname, but on the other hand, it certainly stands out from the crowd.

"Really... well. I suppose I don't have much room to look askance as renaissance names, after all."

He grinning to himself a little lopsidedly at that observation, and chuckled sheepishly.

"I'm afraid I'm rather new to the company of other people with... abilities, so to speak. I beg your pardon in advance, if I'm a little uncertain how to discuss it properly, until I've acclimated."

"Hey, no problem. I'm not used to...a lot of things about living up here, to be honest." Being in the company of other mutants was normal, but being in the company of anyone who could pass for human at all was still something relatively new to Leo, and the fact that he was going to school at all was going to take a little getting used to.

"I'm in no position to judge."

[upatbat]

[Leo's not the only new student exploring things, but he's definitely the most eye-catching one so far. Aki stops in her tracks as she sees him jumping between two trees and stares for a few moments, blinking in confusion.

That... looks like a giant turtle boy jumping around in the trees. In fact, Aki is pretty sure that is exactly what she's seeing. Guess that just confirms what sort of school she's at, but she really hadn't expected things to go this far so far.

It's a lucky that she's good at rolling with the punches, and she steps up to stand right under Leonardo and calls up.]

Can you fly or something?

[kamiizumi]

[He was this close to taking off again, until he hears a voice from below - so instead of jumping forward, he jumps straight down, catching the branch with both hands as he drops and stopping himself to hang in midair, then taking a smaller jump the rest of the way down.

Yelling at people from the tops of trees isn't the most super polite way to have a conversation, after all.]

No flying. Just...lots of jumping.

[upatbat]

Just jumping? You're pretty good at it.

[She backs up a step, just to make sure he has room to land without them bumping into each other. Once he's down, she moves closer, one hand on her hip as she talks.]

But you're not going to break your neck if you fall out, right?

[She stares him down, concerned but trying not to be pushy about it. She might be failing already.]

I have a lot of practice.

[...understatement.]

Don't worry, I've been doing stuff like this for years and I haven't broken anything yet.

[Yet.

Leo, this is not how you brush off concern.]

[upatbat]

[Well, she might be a little dazzled by his skill, but that doesn't stop her from shaking her head and sighing loudly.]

Doesn't that just mean the first time you do will be that much worse?

[Yeah, he is not helping her feel better about this.]

You should at least wait until a week or two goes by before you put yourself out for the semester.

[kamiizumi]

My father taught me how to take a fall. I'm not too worried.

[It's all about the tuck and roll and...well, it's a little different doing it right with a shell on your back, but he's learned how to work that into the equation, too.]

[upatbat]

It's a family thing, huh?

[That actually makes her feel a little better. She figures that dads who go out of their way to make their kids learn to take falls generally know what they're doing.]

I guess if you've been doing it for that long, you know what you're doing... But you should probably make sure the teachers don't catch you doing it inside.

Not getting caught was the lesson right after not breaking anything.

[Sun isn't exactly trying to spot the giant turtle hopping around in the trees, but Sun himself is actually sitting in a tree on a branch. He honestly felt the most comfortable out in nature like this, so sitting in a tree was just really relaxing for him.

He does however catch sight of the turtle when he leaps up into a tree that Sun is already in.]

Well this isn't something you see everyday.

That applies to a lot of things here, or so I'm told.

[There's not actually any sarcasm to his tone - it's a completely legit point, after all - but even if he's polite about it, it is still a deflection, meant to ward off "wow you are a turtle in a tree" off at the pass, if this train of thought was thinking about going there.]

Sorry if I disturbed you.

[He's not sure if this guy's the type to even mind, but bugging people wasn't exactly his intention here.]

[It wouldn't have been so weird to see him on the ground, but yeah, seeing him leap into a tree? That was kind of a strange sight.]

You didn't, so don't worry about it. [Sun sits up a bit and coils his tail around the branch in case he loses his balance while he is sitting on it.] What are you doing up here anyway?

[Leo, for his part, shifts out of that ready-to-leap crouch into a slightly more comfortable position. If it's gonna be a conversation, then hey, no need to look like he's ready to bolt.]

Better vantage point.

Better vantage point..are you expecting an attack or something? [Or was he planning to attack someone? There weren't many reasons one would need a good vantage point from a tree.]

Not necessarily, but I like to know my territory.

[This wouldn't be the first place he didn't expect an attack, and got one anyway.]

[Not really a bad idea. Something Sun should probably do at some point.]

How much of it have you learned by now?

I'm Sun Wukong, by the way.

Just the basics, for now, but Rome wasn't built in a day.

[And he'll be doing this at least once a day until he's got things down, and probably regularly after that, just to stay sharp. Leo doesn't do things halfway.]
